Production and Filming

The screenplay was written by Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski and adapted from the 1982 graphic novel of the same name by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. However, significant changes were made to the original comic’s storyline, prompting Alan Moore to request that his name be removed from the credits. Nevertheless, the producers and directors decided to retain his name in the credits as the original creator of the graphic novel.

The film was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, and most of its filming took place at the Babelsberg Studios in Germany, where large sets were constructed to reflect the dark, dystopian atmosphere of the film. Additional filming occurred in London, the capital of England. Although the film was originally scheduled for release on November 5, 2005—the same date as the film’s iconic Guy Fawkes Day—post-production and special effects work delayed its release by several months.

Thematic Structure and Character Analysis

V for Vendetta explores powerful themes such as totalitarianism, freedom, resistance, revenge, and justice. In the film, while the totalitarian regime maintains control through fear and oppression, the character of V rises in resistance for freedom and justice. V’s actions transcend personal vengeance and evolve into a broader popular struggle for liberty.

Characters

1. V: A masked revolutionary, V seeks revenge for past suffering and injustice while aiming to liberate the people. He oscillates between violence and idealism, and his mask becomes a symbol of freedom. He pursues social justice beyond personal retribution. V’s character embodies complexity and ideological leadership.

2. Evey Hammond: Initially an innocent and fearful woman, Evey transforms into a courageous resistor after meeting V. Through her involvement in his cause, she undergoes a personal transformation and develops a deeper understanding of freedom. She embraces V’s ideals but questions his methods.

3. Chancellor Adam Sutler: As the head of the totalitarian regime, Sutler maintains power through fear and control. He embodies the archetype of a fascist leader and represents the most powerful force of oppressive rule. The entire regime revolves around him as he restricts the people’s freedoms.

4. Detective Finch: Initially a loyal government detective pursuing V, Finch gradually becomes aware of the system’s injustices. By listening to his conscience, he begins to understand and sympathize with V’s struggle.

5. Gordon Deitrich: Known as a television presenter, Gordon is in fact a secret activist who advocates for people to live without fear. His humorous and intelligent approach seeks to provide balance within the dark world of the film.
