Ağrı
About the City
Ağrı is located in eastern Türkiye, near the border with Iran. It derives its name from Ağrı Dağı, Türkiye’s highest mountain. Standing at 5,137 meters, Ağrı Dağı is one of the highest points not only in Türkiye but also in Europe and the Middle East. The mountain is of volcanic origin and is also associated with the legend of Noah’s Ark.
Throughout history, Ağrı and its surroundings have been home to many civilizations. The Urartians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans have all left their mark on this land. Its most famous historical structure is the İshak Paşa Sarayı. This palace is one of the most original examples of Ottoman architecture in the East, combining styles from Anatolia, Iran, and the Seljuks.
The economy of Ağrı is based primarily on animal husbandry. Although the cold climate and high altitude make agriculture challenging, crops such as wheat, barley, and potatoes are still cultivated. Additionally, its proximity to Iran has made border trade an important economic activity through its border crossings.
