Göksu Travertines
Pamukkale’s famous snow-white terraces are something you’ve surely heard of. But did you know that nestled among the green forests of the Black Sea, there is also a “mini Pamukkale” with brilliant blue pools? Giresun’s Göksu Travertenleri are a wonderful natural surprise, as if they had sprung straight from the pages of a fairy tale.
Where Is This Blue Miracle?
Göksu Travertenleri are located in the village of Pınarlar, within the Dereli district of Giresun province. This site is part of the vast Kuzalan Nature Park. Located approximately 58 kilometers from the center of Giresun, it resembles a hidden treasure of pure white stone nestled among lush green trees.
If you take the path here, you will not only find the travertines but also walking trails, shops selling local products, and pleasant cafés where you can rest.
How Were the White Stones Formed?
The local people refer to these unique formations as “white stones”. But how did they become so brilliantly white? The answer lies in the mineral-rich waters rising from beneath the earth. These waters, abundant in calcium and lime, come into contact with the air as they surface.
As a result of this contact, the minerals in the water precipitate and gradually harden, forming white layers. The water in Göksu contains high levels of soda, giving its pools an enchanting turquoise and blue hue. In fact, these waters are the original source of the beautiful color found in the region’s famous Mavigöl.

Why Is It So Important?
Göksu and the nearby Kuzalan travertines are among the rarest such formations in the world. Among forested travertine regions globally, this is the second largest after the famous Yellowstone National Park in the United States.
Once entirely covered in moss, these areas began to transform as mineral-rich waters started flowing. The white travertines gradually formed, and the moss gave way to these stunning stone structures.

🕰️ A Journey Through Time
The Göksu Travertenleri did not form in a single day! For these brilliant white and hardened layers to develop, mineral-rich waters flowing from beneath the earth had to flow continuously for centuries.
