Siirt is a province located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region of Türkiye. Throughout history, it has been home to many different civilizations. Where is Siirt?

Siirt is situated in the eastern part of the Southeastern Anatolia Region. It is bordered by Bitlis to the north, Şırnak to the east, Mardin to the south, and Batman to the west. Its total area is approximately 5,400 km².

The region features both mountainous terrain and plains. The northern part of Siirt is covered by high mountain ranges, while the southern areas consist of flatter landscapes. The Botan Valley is one of the province’s most famous natural attractions.

A Brief History of Siirt

Siirt is an ancient settlement site. Human habitation here dates back to the Neolithic Age (around 10,000 years ago). Among the earliest civilizations to rule this land were the Sumerians, Assyrians, and Babylonians.

Later, the Hittites, Persians, Romans, and Byzantines inhabited the region. In 639, Islamic armies conquered Siirt, bringing it under Muslim rule.

The Seljuks, Artuqids, Ayyubids, and Ottomans all left their mark on Siirt. When the Republic was proclaimed in 1923, Siirt became a province. Today, you can still see traces of these diverse cultures in the city’s streets and buildings.

Nature and Climate

The northeast of Siirt is dominated by high mountains. Its highest peak is Yazlıca Mountain (Herekol Mountain), reaching 2,838 meters. In contrast, the southern areas are flatter.

Animals and Plants

Some areas of Siirt are covered with oak forests, while the southern regions feature steppes (treeless areas covered with grass).

Population of Siirt

Approximately 336,000 people live in Siirt. The province is home to diverse ethnic groups, including Turks, Kurds, and Arabs. While the population in the provincial center is growing, rural villages are experiencing population decline.

Livelihoods: Pistachios and Honey

Siirt’s economy is primarily based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Siirt Pistachios are the province’s most famous product. Unlike Gaziantep pistachios, they are smaller and more aromatic.

Another renowned product is Pervari Honey, produced by bees in high-altitude pastures and highly valued for its quality. Additionally, wool from tiftik goats is used to make the well-known Siirt Blanket and kilims.

Historical Sites

• Siirt Ulu Camii: Built by the Seljuks in 1129, it is renowned for its stonework.
• Veysel Karani Türbesi: This tomb, located in the Tillo district, is an important pilgrimage site for Muslims.
• Tillo Castle and İsmail Fakirullah Türbesi: These structures in Tillo hold both historical and scientific significance.
• Botan Valley: Famous for its dramatic cliffs and natural beauty, it is ideal for hiking and camping.
