97th Academy Awards

The 97th ceremony of the Academy Awards, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and Science, took place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted by Conan O'Brien. Awards were presented across 23 categories to honor the most distinguished films and individuals in the film industry.

The award for Best Film went to the film Anora, directed by Sean Baker, which also won the awards for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Mikey Madison, who portrayed the lead role in the film, won the award for Best Actress.

• The award for Best Documentary went to No Other Land, directed by Basel Adra and Yuval Abraham. The film explores the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts in the Masafer Yatta region of the West Bank between 2019 and 2023. At the ceremony, Basel Adra stated that the documentary reflects “the enduring resistance of the Palestinian people.”

• Adrien Brody won the award for Best Actor for his performance in The Brutalist, becoming the first actor to be nominated for an Oscar twice and win both times.
• Sean Baker became the first person to win four Oscars for a single film with Anora.
• Paul Tazewell became the first Black individual to win the award for Best Costume Design for his work on Wicked.
• Brazil won its first-ever Oscar with I’m Still Here, directed by Walter Salles.

• Honoring the Los Angeles Firefighters: Firefighters who responded to the January 7, 2025, Los Angeles fire that claimed at least 27 lives were invited on stage and received a standing ovation.

• Adrien Brody and Halle Berry Reenact Their Oscar Moment: In 2003, Adrien Brody won the Oscar for The Pianist and famously kissed Halle Berry while accepting his award. Twenty-two years later, Berry playfully kissed Brody before the ceremony, recreating the iconic moment.
