Airbus A318

The Airbus A318 is a narrow-body jet airliner designed and manufactured by the European aerospace company Airbus and the smallest and shortest member of the A320 family. Often referred to in aviation literature as the “Baby Bus,” this aircraft is recorded as the manufacturer’s first entry into the 100-seat passenger aircraft market. The A318 was primarily intended to replace older generation Boeing 737 and Douglas DC-9 type aircraft and was offered to the market with various takeoff weights and range options.

The first model of the A320 family the A320 entered service in 1988 and was followed in subsequent years by the A321 the A319 and finally the A318. The A318’s first commercial airline operation took place in 2003 with Frontier Airlines. This aircraft is flown by a two-person flight crew and its passenger capacity varies depending on the cabin configuration preferred by airlines. A typical two-class layout can accommodate 107 passengers while standard configurations generally carry between 90 and 110 passengers. In high-density single-class arrangements it can seat up to 132 to 137 passengers.^【1】

When examining the structural and technical dimensions of the aircraft the fuselage length is approximately 31.4 metres (103 feet 2 inches) the external height is approximately 12.5 metres (41 feet 1 inch) and the wingspan is approximately 34.1 metres (111 feet 11 inches). ^【2】The cabin interior measures approximately 21.3 metres in length 3.7 metres in width and 1.91 metres in height. According to performance metrics the A318 achieves a cruise speed of 828 kilometres per hour (444 knots) and a maximum speed of approximately 1005 kilometres per hour (542 knots) with a maximum flight altitude of 41000 feet. ^【3】The range of the standard passenger model varies between 5590 and 5700 kilometres.^【4】

One of the most notable engineering advantages of the A318 model in civil aviation is its ability to perform steep approaches with a 5.5-degree glide slope compared to the standard 3-degree approach angle of conventional commercial aircraft. This feature officially approved by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in 2007 and supported by twin CFM International turbofan engines enables the aircraft to operate at challenging airports such as London City Airport which impose strict noise and obstacle restrictions.

During its production period Airbus manufactured only 80 A318 aircraft with orders completed over a period of approximately ten years. The aircraft’s market share in scheduled commercial operations has declined since its introduction. Air France the national carrier of France became the world’s largest operator of this model by adding 18 aircraft to its fleet between 2003 and 2007. As of July 2023 the airline retained nine A318s seven of which were still active and operated from Paris Orly and Charles de Gaulle airports to various European and African destinations including Amsterdam Zurich Algiers and Marrakesh.

The only other airline to operate the A318 in scheduled service was TAROM the flag carrier of Romania. The airline added four A318s to its fleet between 2006 and 2007 and deployed them on European routes from its base in Bucharest to cities such as London Amsterdam and Istanbul. However with the introduction of newer generation A320 family aircraft such as the A321LR and A321XLR which offer significantly greater range and fuel efficiency the commercial airline use of the A318 has largely ceased. As of July 2023 the number of A318s still in scheduled airline service worldwide had declined to only nine.

In contrast to its limited service life in commercial airline operations the A318 has found considerable success in corporate jet private charter and government fleet roles. In 2005 Airbus introduced the A318 Elite variant (also known as the ACJ318) preserving the technical foundation of the standard commercial model but equipping it with high-end VIP amenities. These aircraft optimized for private corporate transport and premium charter flights offer a spacious and comfortable cabin capable of accommodating between 14 and 19 passengers depending on interior configuration.

The A318 Elite cabins feature advanced VIP amenities including wireless internet entertainment systems fully equipped galleys rest and meeting areas and sleeping accommodations. In operational performance this business jet variant achieves an extended range of 7400 kilometres (4000 nautical miles) and a maximum speed of 623 miles per hour thanks to its modified structure.^【5】
