Akhisar Domat Olive Oil is an extra virgin olive oil obtained from the Akhisar domat olive grown in the Akhisar district of Manisa province and its surrounding districts, including Gölmarmara, Salihli, Turgutlu, Saruhanlı, and Kırkağaç. The product was applied for protection as a geographical indication under the Industrial Property Law No. 6769 with a Protected Geographical Indication on November 10, 2017, and was registered by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office on March 28, 2022. The registration process was conducted by the Akhisar Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Product Characteristics
Only the Akhisar domat olives, registered under number 166 and grown within the specified geographical area, are used in the production of this olive oil. In this context, there is a direct relationship between the product’s reputation and its geographical origin. Akhisar Domat Olive Oil is notable for its low free fatty acid content and peroxide value. It is also characterized by high ß-sitosterol levels and total sterol content, which define the purity and quality standard of the product.
Production Process
The production process includes harvesting the olives, washing, crushing, turning into a paste, breaking the oil-water emulsion, separating the oil via centrifugation or pressing, removing wastewater, storing in stainless steel tanks in an odor-free and temperature-controlled environment, removing sediments using soil and paper filtration methods, and finally filling into glass or tin containers. All these steps are carried out to preserve the chemical and physical properties of the product.
Packaging and Labeling
During packaging, the product must display the inscription “Akhisar Domat Olive Oil,” the Protected Geographical Indication emblem, and one of the registered logos. The logo must be at least 3x3 cm in size and no smaller than two-thirds of the company brand.
Inspection and Protection Process
The inspection process is coordinated by the Akhisar Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The inspection authority is composed of experts from the Akhisar Commodity Exchange, the Akhisar District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Bornova Olive Research Institute. Inspections are conducted at least once a year and can also be carried out upon complaint. The inspections verify compliance with production methods, use of Akhisar domat olives, accuracy of chemical properties, and correctness of labeling on packaging. Samples are coded to keep company information confidential. Inspection costs are covered by the Akhisar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, with the right of recourse to the sample owner.
