Ali Sami Yen was a football player and sports administrator who contributed to the organization of sports in Türkiye during the late Ottoman period and the early years of the Republic. He was one of the founders of Galatasaray Sports Club and served as its number one founding member and president.
Ali Sami Yen was born in Istanbul in 1886. He was the son of Şemsettin Sami, a prominent Ottoman intellectual. Of Albanian descent, Ali Sami Yen completed his education at Galatasaray Mekteb-i Sultanîsi. During his years at this school, he became interested in football and learned its rules by observing matches organized by British students in Istanbul.
In 1905, while still a student at Galatasaray Mekteb-i Sultanîsi, Ali Sami Yen co-founded Galatasaray Football Club with a group of friends including Asım Tevfik Sonumut, Reşat Şirvani and Cevdet Kalpakçıoğlu. The primary objective of the club’s founding was to strengthen national representation through sport, framed within the political and social context of the time as a means to defeat teams that were not Turkish. 【1】 The club soon began competing in the Istanbul Football League and entered a process of institutionalization.
Ali Sami Yen’s playing career unfolded in accordance with the conditions of the era. As a midfielder, he ended his on-field career after sustaining an injury during a match against Kadıköy Takımı at the end of 1907.
Between 1905 and 1918, Ali Sami Yen served as president of Galatasaray Sports Club. During this period, he played an active role in establishing the club’s colors, institutional identity and organizational structure, holding the presidency for a total of 14 years.
In addition to his roles at Galatasaray, Ali Sami Yen contributed to the organization of sports in Türkiye. In 1926, he became president of the Turkish Football Federation and participated in organizing Türkiye’s first international match, the Türkiye-Romania game held the same year. He was also elected president of the Turkish Sports Associations Alliance, contributing to the institutional foundation of sports disciplines beyond football. He advocated for the integration of sports with education and submitted various reports to the Ministry of National Education in this regard.
Fluent in French and Arabic, Yen applied his linguistic skills to enrich Turkish sports literature. His translation efforts played a significant role in the development of written resources for sports education in Türkiye. At the same time, through his work as a teacher, he encouraged young people to adopt a disciplined lifestyle through sport.
Ali Sami Yen authored the book Futbol Kitabı, published in 1927, which is regarded as one of the earliest works on football in Türkiye. The book systematically addresses the technical aspects of football, its rules and on-field strategies. In this way, it not only conveyed the theoretical foundations of the sport but also served as one of the early written sources that contributed to the popularization of football in Türkiye.
In 1910, Ali Sami Yen established the Galatasaray Museum within the framework of Galatasaray Sports Club, the first institution in Türkiye to function as a sports museum. The museum was created to collect and display documents and materials related to the club’s history and also contained some data on the early period of Turkish sport. This initiative is considered one of the earliest examples of archival and exhibition efforts related to sports in Türkiye.
Ali Sami Yen died in Istanbul on 29 July 1951. He is buried in Feriköy Cemetery. He is recognized as a pivotal figure in the institutionalization of sports in Türkiye, the popularization of football and the formation of Galatasaray Sports Club’s historical identity. In 1964, the stadium that opened that year and hosted Galatasaray Sports Club’s home matches until 2011 was named after him: the Ali Sami Yen Stadium.
