ALPAGU (STM)

ALPAGU is a national strike unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system designed to be portable by a single operator, featuring fixed wings, electric propulsion, and high-precision target destruction capabilities. Developed by STM Defense Technologies Engineering and Trade Inc., ALPAGU is primarily used for tactical-level reconnaissance, surveillance, and high-precision elimination of targets outside the line of sight.

Design and System Components

ALPAGU is a lightweight and ergonomic system featuring a composite airframe and indigenous avionics. The system consists of a fixed-wing strike UAV, a pneumatic launcher (launch tube), and a mobile ground control station. The platform can be effectively deployed without detection by enemy forces due to its low radar signature, high speed, and quiet operation. Launched via a pneumatic canister, ALPAGU is portable by a single soldier and can be rapidly prepared for mission deployment.

Mission Capabilities and Operational Features

Thanks to STM’s indigenous embedded mission computer and flight control algorithms, ALPAGU possesses full autonomous navigation capability. During missions, target detection and destruction are conducted under the “Man-in-the-Loop” principle, with operator control. The system is equipped with image processing-based fire control infrastructure and wide-angle electro-optical systems, enabling operations in both day and night conditions. One of its standout capabilities compared to systems in its class is the ability to track moving targets, execute precise point strikes, and perform flexible mission modes such as flight termination, strike waiver-off, or self-destruction. Additionally, an electronic proximity fuse determines the optimal detonation time before impact, enhancing destructive effect.

ALPAGU is particularly suited for counter-terrorism, border security, urban combat, and asymmetric warfare scenarios. Moreover, by enabling cost-effective and efficient destruction of high-risk targets, it serves as an alternative to conventional munitions. Additionally, when combined with a multi-launcher option integrable with ground vehicles, it can generate area effects in intense combat zones.

Export and Inventory Integration Process

As of 2023, ALPAGU was exported abroad for the first time. Although it has not yet been officially integrated into the inventory of the Turkish Armed Forces, procurement processes are underway and field tests have been completed. Like STM’s other systems, KARGU and TOGAN, ALPAGU has attracted significant international interest from various continents and countries, expanding its export portfolio.

Naming and Meaning

The term “Alpagu” in Old Turkish means “a brave warrior who attacks the enemy alone.” The UAV’s lightweight structure, high maneuverability, and precision strike capability directly align with this meaning.
