Amasra Castle

Amasra Castle, located in the district of Amasra within the province of Bartın, is a historically and culturally significant structure situated along the coast of the Black Sea. This place site has served both defensive and residential functions since antiquity. Bearing traces from the Roman, Byzantine, Genoese, and Ottoman periods, Amasra Castle offers visitors a rich past through its layered history. Today, the castle is preserved as a cultural heritage site and has become a major tourist gravity.

History of Amasra Castle

The initial construction of Amasra Castle dates back to the Roman Empire. During the Roman period, this strategic structure played a vital role in controlling the trade routes opening to the Black Sea. In subsequent centuries, the Byzantines strengthened the castle and expanded its defensive systems. In the 13th century, the Genoese, who dominated the region, added modifications reflecting their own architectural style. The Ottomans took control of the castle in 1460 following the conquest of Amasra by Fatih Sultan Mehmet and carried out various restoration works.

Architectural Structure

Amasra Castle consists of two main sections: Boztepe and the Dungeon. Boztepe is situated on a promontory, while the Dungeon Quarter extends along the coastline. These two sections are connected by a Roman-era arched bridge. The castle walls rise from natural cliffs and reach thicknesses of up to eight meters in some areas.

The walls are reinforced at intervals by towers. Within the castle, architectural elements from different periods can be observed. Towers, arched gates, and defensive battlements constructed during the Genoese period are among the most striking features of the structure.

The castle has two main entrances: the “Sormagir Gate” facing close from Kemere Bridge, and the “Dungeon Gate” located on the side of the Dungeon Quarter. These gates provide access between the inner and outer sections of the castle.

Additionally, within Amasra Castle, there are tower niches, internal partitions, Genoese coats of arms placed at specific locations, and sculpted figures of Eros, Medusa, eagles, and bull-headed like.

Cultural and Touristic Significance

Amasra Castle is a significant historical structure that attracts both domestic and foreign tourists. The narrow alleys, well-preserved buildings, and commanding views of the landscape provide visitors with a profound historical atmosphere. The castle has been included on UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites and is recognized as an important element of cultural heritage requiring protection.
