Ankara Adnan Ötüken Provincial Public Library

Founding and History

The foundations of the Ankara Adnan Ötüken Provincial Public Library were laid on 25 July 1922 in the basement of the Ministry of National Education. This institution, which began service in the same year on 26 July under the name “General Education Library,” acquired the status of a compilation library in 1934. On 16 August 1965, it was restructured within the framework of the people library model and began operating as a modern public library. As one of the first libraries established during the Republic era, this institution is among the pioneers of modern public librarianship in Türkiye.

Adnan Ötüken’s Role

Adnan Ötüken, after whom the library is named, was a key figure in the institutionalization of librarianship in Türkiye. As the first director general of the General Directorate of Libraries, established in 1946, he organized the structure of public libraries. Ötüken, who passed away in 1981, had his name bestowed upon this library in 1985, thereby immortalizing his legacy.

Development and Periodic Transformations

Library has been housed since 1944–1946 in a building designed and constructed by German architect Paul Bonatz. In 1979, building was designated as the first degree urban seating area and underwent various renovation and restoration projects over time. In 2018, a major portion of the collection was transferred to Presidential National Library, yet user services were not disrupted, and the collection was continuously supported by new publications.

Collections and Archives

The library holds a collection of approximately 80,000 books. Collection is rich in history, literature, social sciences, child books, and exam preparation resources. It also provides access to periodicals, audiovisual materials, and electronic resources. In the past, the library also served as a national compilation center for Türkiye.

Services and Activities

The library offers its users a wide range of services including lending, reference assistance, internet access, individual and group work areas, and dedicated children’s and youth sections. It fosters an active cultural life through events such as lectures, book presentations, author-reader gatherings, and educational workshops. Additionally, it provides books in Braille and audio materials for visually impaired users. In recent years, it has ensured uninterrupted access through departments operating 7 day 24 hour.

Architectural Structure and Physical Features

The library building, located in one of the central points of place, is designed with a simple and functional modernist architectural approach. High-ceilinged reading rooms, naturally lit study areas, and dedicated children’s and youth sections give building both aesthetic and functional quality. The building, registered as a cultural heritage site in 1979, is also part of Ankara’s cultural heritage.

The library has taken a leading position in digital services by updating its technological infrastructure. Patrons can easily complete borrowing transactions through self-check kiosks and benefit from digital services such as online catalogs, e-book access, and e-State integration.
