Cephanelik is a significant military structure located on the eastern slope of Boztepe in the Ortahisar district of Trabzon and is one of the city’s historic defensive buildings. As part of the strengthened Ottoman-era defense system of Trabzon, this structure was used for the storage and protection of ammunition.

Historical Background

The exact construction date of Cephanelik is not known, but it is generally accepted to have been built in the late 19th century during the Ottoman period. During this time, Trabzon, as one of the strategic cities along the Black Sea coast, faced increasing defense needs, prompting the planning and rapid construction of the ammunition depot. Designed specifically to ensure the secure storage of ammunition against potential naval attacks, the structure served an important military function.

Architectural Features

Cephanelik is constructed with a circular plan and thick stone walls. Its architectural design was shaped to meet security requirements, featuring large ammunition storage chambers and access passages connecting them. The thickness of the walls and the limited number of openings were deliberately incorporated to provide protection against possible attacks. The upper section is covered by a dome-like structure resembling a circular vault. This architectural approach, consistent with the military architecture of the period, enhanced the building’s durability and helped preserve its original form over many years.

Use and Function

Cephanelik was used to meet the ammunition needs of the military garrison in Trabzon.
