ASELSAN CATS

CATS (Common Aperture Targeting System) is a high-performance electro-optical reconnaissance, surveillance, and targeting system developed by ASELSAN for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), helicopters, aircraft, and other airborne platforms. CATS is of critical importance especially for UAVs, as it integrates multiple optical channels to deliver advanced imaging and targeting capabilities.

General and Structural Features

CATS features a common optical aperture with a diameter of 220 mm. This aperture enables the system to capture more light, resulting in improved image quality and extended range. The system incorporates IR (infrared), HD Day TV, and DI-NIR (Low-Light Near-Infrared) cameras, which ensure effective imaging even under low-light conditions. CATS provides users with a broad range of viewing options through multiple fields of view and zoom levels.

In the CATS+ version, the previous system’s 1920x1080 resolution camera has been upgraded to 4096x2880 resolution, significantly enhancing image quality. Additionally, artificial intelligence-based advanced image processing solutions have greatly improved the precision of target detection and tracking.

Comprehensive Imaging and Targeting Capability

CATS stands out through its capabilities in multi-target tracking and simultaneous target tracking. The system is equipped with a laser target designator and a rangefinder, enabling it to determine the direction and speed of moving targets, designate targets with laser, and enable engagement by laser-guided munitions. Furthermore, features such as precise stabilization, an inertial measurement unit, and automatic platform alignment make the system exceptionally accurate under demanding operational conditions.

CATS can target a wide area with a 360° continuous field of regard and an elevation range of +57° to -105°. Its ability to operate at high altitudes and in extremely low temperatures makes it suitable for effective use under all climatic conditions.

CATS features a multispectral optical aperture operating in the 3–5 micron wavelength range and integrates high-resolution IR, HD Day TV, and DI-NIR cameras.

Applications and Operational Capabilities

CATS is primarily used in the fields of targeting, reconnaissance, and surveillance. It operates effectively across a wide range of platforms, from UAVs to helicopters, aircraft, and maritime systems.

ASELSAN began serial production of CATS systems in 2016 and increased production rates from 2017 onward to a target of 36 units per year, up from three units per month. CATS also replaces the previously deployed AselFLIR-200 system, providing a solution to maintenance and obsolescence issues associated with older systems.
