Bağdatlı Ruhi was an Ottoman poet who lived a long time ago. His poems were both critical and full of lessons.Bağdatlı Ruhi’s real name was Osman. He was born in Baghdad, but we don’t know exactly when he was born. His father was an Ottoman soldier, and Ruhi also worked as a soldier for a while, like his father. But his true passion was writing poetry, so he dedicated his life to it. Ruhi was born in Baghdad and moved to different places as a child because of his father’s job. But Ruhi discovered his love for poetry when he was very young and started improving himself in it. At first, Bağdatlı Ruhi worked as a soldier and was in charge of a small town for the Ottoman Empire. However, being a soldier didn’t suit him. Over time, he left his duties and devoted himself to writing poetry. In his poems, Ruhi talked about the hardships of life. His most famous poem is called Terkib-Bend. He became known for writing about people's daily problems and the things that were wrong in society. Through his poetry, Ruhi showed both the good and bad sides of people and taught important lessons. His poems are honest and natural. Even though he knew Arabic and Persian, he chose to write in simple Turkish so everyone could understand. After leaving the army, Bağdatlı Ruhi traveled to many cities. He visited Ottoman cities like Istanbul, Konya, and Damascus. He also visited Mevlana’s tomb and even went to Mecca. However, he never stayed in one place for long because he always wanted to be free. He had the spirit of a dervish and was interested in Sufism.Bağdatlı Ruhi spent the last years of his life in Damascus, where he passed away around the year 1604. Bağdatlı Ruhi gave important messages to people through his poems. His poem Terkib-Bend is considered one of the most valuable works of Ottoman poetry. It teaches that money and fame are not as important as people think.
