Battlefield™ V (Video Game)

Battlefield V is a first-person shooter video game developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. As the sixteenth entry in the Battlefield series, it focuses on previously underexplored theaters of World War II. The game features both a single-player mode called "War Stories" and large-scale multiplayer battles, a hallmark of the series. Developed using the Frostbite game engine, it was released for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Battlefield V was developed by the Swedish video game studio DICE and published by Electronic Arts (EA). The game was first released worldwide on 20 November 2018 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Development utilized the Frostbite 3 game engine. The post-launch content model was based on a live service structure called "Tides of War," which aimed to provide all players with free gameplay content such as maps, modes and weapons, instead of paid expansion packs or a "Premium Pass." Following years of updates, EA released the Battlefield V Definitive Edition, which consolidated all gameplay content, cosmetic elements added over a two-year period, and elite soldiers into a single package. This edition was positioned as a complete package for new players.

Battlefield V retains the core gameplay mechanics of the series while introducing several innovations. The game features a mechanic called "Attrition," in which players start with limited ammunition and their health does not automatically refill, making them more reliant on teammates and strategic positions. Players can also use the "Fortifications" system to construct structures such as bunkers, tank traps and supply stations. Multiplayer modes include "Conquest," the series classic based on flag control across large maps, and "Grand Operations," a narrative-driven structure that spans multiple maps and modes. Players can choose from four primary classes: Assault, Medic, Support and Recon, each designed to support team play and strategic depth.

The single-player component of the game is presented in an anthology format called "War Stories," similar to Battlefield 1. This format focuses on independent, personal stories set across different theaters of World War II. Each story explores lesser-known aspects of the war and conflicts in diverse geographical regions. For example, one story centers on a young woman fighting in the Norwegian resistance, while another recounts the struggle of Senegalese tirailleurs from French colonial units. This approach aims to depict the global impact and human dimension of war through multiple perspectives, rather than following a linear narrative centered on a single protagonist. The post-launch story "The Last Tiger" presents the final days of the war from the viewpoint of a German Tiger I tank crew.
