Belemedik

Belemedik is a highland settlement and natural area within the Pozantı district of Adana Province. It is located 9 kilometers from the district center and 117 kilometers from the city center of Adana. Access is provided via a stabilized road passing through Anbaş Village, and the region is also reachable via the Adana-Ankara railway line. The Belemedik Train Station, located on this line, is one of the historically significant structures in the area.

Historical Background

Belemedik became a major logistical and engineering hub in the early 1900s as part of the Berlin-Baghdad Railway Project. During the construction of the Varda Bridge and the 22 tunnels through the Taurus Mountains, the area was transformed into a large construction site accommodating approximately 5,000 German engineers and workers. During this period, social infrastructure including a hospital, school, and church were built. Today, these structures have deteriorated over time and now present a “ruined city” appearance. These historical remnants are currently being restored by the Pozantı Municipality for tourism purposes.

Natural Features

Belemedik possesses a rich ecosystem composed of forests, mountains, and rivers. Located along the banks of the Çakıt Creek, the area is notable for its rich flora and fauna, unspoiled natural landscape, and century-old plane trees. Its vegetation, displaying all shades of yellow and green, offers a visual spectacle. Wildlife such as the wild goat, wild boar, and various birds of prey are integral parts of the natural environment.

Highland Settlement and Architecture

Belemedik features traditional highland houses constructed from local stone and wood. These structures preserve the region’s architectural character while also providing accommodation. The highland settlement is regarded as an important recreational destination during summer months due to its cool climate and integration with nature.

Tourism Activities

In recent years, Belemedik has become a preferred destination for nature hiking, photography, birdwatching, and day trips. The Pozantı Municipality continues to develop social facilities in the area, including restaurants, barbecue parks, boutique hotels, picnic areas, and walking trails. Thematic tourism projects based on historical heritage are being developed, particularly to increase interest among German tourists.

Connection to the Varda Bridge

The Varda Bridge, located near Belemedik and now a symbol of the region, attracts attention for both its engineering legacy and visual grandeur. The bridge, featured in the James Bond film Skyfall (2012), is a major tourist attraction. It is being promoted together with Belemedik to ensure tourism coherence.
