Blue Exorcist (Series)

Blue Exorcist (Japanese: 青の祓魔師Ao no Ekusorisuto) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kazue Kato. Under its media franchise, it has been adapted into various formats including anime series, films, light novels, stage plays, and video games. The work is classified under the genres of dark fantasy and supernatural action.

The series was serialized starting in April 2009 in Shueisha’s monthly manga magazine Jump Square. Published chapters are collected and released in tankōbon volumes at regular intervals. The English-language publishing rights in North America were acquired by Viz Media. The animation adaptation was produced by A-1 Pictures and first aired on television in 2011.

The series’ universe consists of two distinct dimensions mirror-linked to each other: Assiah, the physical world inhabited by humans, and Gehenna, the dimension inhabited by demons. The ruler of Gehenna is Satan. Under normal circumstances, travel or direct interaction between these two dimensions is impossible. However, demons can possess objects or living beings in Assiah to cross over into it. Individuals trained to expel demons from Assiah are called Exorcists. Exorcists are divided into five specialized fields: Paladin, Dragoon, Tamer, Arya, and Doctor. The global organization overseeing exorcist activities is the True Cross Order.

The story centers on Rin and Yukio Okumura, two brothers raised by the exorcist priest Shiro Fujimoto. Rin learns that he and his brother are the biological children of Satan. After Satan launches an attack to draw Rin into Gehenna, Fujimoto dies. In the aftermath, Rin draws the special sword Kurikara, which breaks his seal and transforms him into a blue-flamed half-demon. Determined to defeat his biological father, Rin enrolls at the True Cross Academy to begin training as an exorcist.

Blue Exorcist’s visual storytelling is supported by detailed background art, intricate weapon designs, and architectural elements inspired by Gothic aesthetics. The narrative explores the contrast between inherited heritage and self-determined destiny. Its mythological foundation draws not only from Western demonology but also from Eastern belief systems such as Japanese Shintoism and Buddhism, incorporating folkloric entities from these traditions.

As the plot progresses, more complex narrative elements are introduced, including internal political struggles within the organization, bureaucratic dynamics, and past illegal experiments. The characters’ psychological traumas, family secrets, and issues of social belonging form the core of the series’ dramatic structure. In combat scenes, strategic planning and teamwork are emphasized alongside physical strength.

The anime adaptations have aired on Japanese television networks including MBS and TBS. International distribution is handled by Aniplex of America. In addition to standard television seasons, independent original video animations (OVAs) have been released alongside limited-edition manga volumes. The opening and ending themes of the anime feature songs by musical groups such as Uverworld, 2PM, and Rookiez is Punk. The background music and symphonic scores were composed by Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto in different seasons. With the third season, animation production changed hands and was taken over by Studio VOLN. The English translation has appeared multiple times on The New York Times’s best-selling manga list and remained on the list for several weeks. In Europe, particularly in France, it achieved high sales figures and reached number one on manga charts. Official soundtrack albums for the anime have charted on various music charts in Japan. Hiroyuki Sawano, who composed the music for the series, received positive technical evaluations from industry platforms and magazine polls for his symphonic and choral compositions in this work.
