Bottomless Lake (Sivas)

Dipsiz Göl is a natural lake located within the boundaries of the Doğanşar district in Sivas Province, in Türkiye’s Central Anatolia Region. The lake lies within the highland pastures of Doğanşar, an area characterized by mountainous terrain. Compared to Sivas and its surroundings, this region boasts a richer vegetation cover. Forested areas composed of tree species such as beech, oriental plane, and Turkish pine form important components of this natural landscape.

Natural Characteristics

Despite its small surface area, Dipsiz Göl attracts attention with the surrounding woodlands and rocky landscapes. The lake and its surroundings are among the region’s recreational areas, defined by their natural character. The local ecosystem around the lake is used by residents and visitors for various recreational purposes.

Environmental Cleaning and Conservation Efforts

Various environmental management and cleaning initiatives have been undertaken to preserve the lake and ensure its sustainable use. In 2017, Dipsiz Göl was cleaned with the participation of personnel from the Sivas Provincial Directorate of Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD), academics from Cumhuriyet University, and divers from various search and rescue associations, following a request by the Doğanşar District Governorate. The aim of these efforts was to eliminate environmental pollution through human-powered methods without damaging the lake’s natural structure and to restore the area to a cleaner state.

On 11 June 2020, a similar cleaning activity was carried out at the lake. During this initiative, conducted by AFAD fisheries officers and volunteer divers, the layer of aquatic vegetation on the lake surface and surrounding environmental pollution were removed. Doğanşar District Governor Onur Aykaç emphasized that care was taken throughout the operations to avoid any harm to living species or the natural environment.

Usage and Management

Dipsiz Göl has long been used as a recreational area. Through cleaning and maintenance activities led by the district governorate and municipality, efforts aim to enhance public access to the lake and its surroundings while preserving its natural integrity.

Dipsiz Göl is one of the key elements shaping the natural landscape of Doğanşar district. The forest cover and natural resources around the lake are protected and sustainably utilized through the contributions of local administrations and volunteer organizations.
