Cehennem Dere Canyon (Artvin)

Cehennem Deresi Kanyonu is a narrow and deep karstic valley located within the boundaries of the Ardanuç district of Artvin province, approximately 7 kilometers from the district center. The canyon measures about 500 meters in length, 70 meters in width, and 6 meters in depth, and is notable for its high and steep walls, narrow passages, and stony footpaths.

Declared a first-degree natural protected area on 14 November 2003, the canyon holds both geomorphological and touristic significance due to its natural caves and steep slopes.

Cehennem Deresi Kanyonu has a karstic canyon structure. Its walls are high and steep, with deep precipices and narrow passages extending along the valley. Natural caves and rugged cliffs are found within the canyon. The walking paths are stony and uneven, with some sections narrow enough to allow passage for only one person at a time.

Cehennem Deresi Kanyonu is protected as a first-degree natural protected area. It was registered on 14 November 2003 by the Trabzon Board for the Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage. It is listed as an area of monumental and environmental importance. Efforts are ongoing to designate it as a nature park.

Tourism infrastructure projects are being developed at Cehennem Deresi Kanyonu. With support from the Eastern Black Sea Development Agency (DOKA) and the Eastern Black Sea Regional Development Administration (DOKAP), plans have been prepared for a glass-bottomed bridge, viewing terraces, walking paths, and a vehicle parking area. The glass bridge is planned to be approximately 83 meters long and 2.5 meters wide. The project also includes provisions for the construction of social facilities.

Cehennem Deresi Kanyonu is located within the boundaries of the Ardanuç district, approximately 7 kilometers from the district center. Visitors typically reach the site by private vehicle. Walking trails surround the canyon, consisting of stony and steep paths, with some sections being narrow. No entrance fee is charged to visit the canyon. Visits occur mostly during spring and summer months.
