Çengilli Church

Çengilli Church is a historical structure located within the boundaries of Çengilli village in the Kağızman district of Kars Province, Türkiye. It is notable for its cross-shaped plan and domed architecture. The church features an interior space measuring approximately 20 by 15 metres and constitutes a unique architectural example with its dome rising 25 metres in height and a drum measuring 9 metres in diameter. The church shares architectural characteristics with other structures in the region.

History

Although its exact construction date is unknown, it is believed to have been built during the 10th and 11th centuries by the Bagratid dynasty, which ruled the region at the time, based on its architectural decorations and features. Three inscriptions on the church indicate restoration work carried out during the 14th century under Georgian rule. Another inscription, dated to the 18th century, is known to have existed but has not survived to the present day. The structure was used by Armenian citizens in the 19th century and continued to function during the approximately 40-year Russian occupation following the 93 War.

Architectural Features

Çengilli Church has a free-cross plan with a dome shaped like a pointed spire and a drum surrounded by twelve blind arches. The main entrance is located on the western facade, with two side entrances on each side of the main entrance. On the entrance level, decorative elements in the shape of the Greek letter omega and nested rectangular windows are present. The dome begins above the termination of the main walls and takes the form of a pointed spire. Relief carvings featuring geometric and vegetal motifs adorn the eaves and the dome spire. Figurative decorations are also present within the interior space.

Restoration Efforts

Although the structure has been preserved by the local community, it currently requires repair and restoration. Visitors and villagers have called for necessary restoration work to be carried out to integrate the church into tourism.
