Doctor Strange is a 2016 American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and directed by Scott Derrickson. Dr. Stephen Strange is an exceptionally skilled but equally arrogant neurosurgeon. After a severe car accident, his hands suffer permanent nerve damage, rendering him unable to practice surgery. Following the failure of Western medicine and all experimental treatments to restore his hands, he travels to Kathmandu, Nepal, in pursuit of Jonathan Pangborn, a patient who, despite being paralyzed from the waist down, walks in a manner unexplainable by medical science^【1】. There, he reaches a hidden center called Kamar-Taj and meets the Ancient One, a master of mystical arts.

Initially skeptical of this mystical teachings, Strange accepts training at Kamar-Taj after the Ancient One shows him parallel realities such as the Mirror Dimension and the multiverse. Under the supervision of librarian Wong, Strange studies ancient texts to develop his magical abilities. He learns that Kaecilius, a former student of the Ancient One, has a dark plan: to summon Dormammu, the ruler of the Dark Dimension who promises eternal life by negating time, to Earth.

To defend the sacred sanctuaries in London, New York, and Hong Kong from Kaecilius and his followers, Strange battles using the mystical artifact known as the Eye of Agamotto and the Cloak of Levitation. During the final battle in Hong Kong, Strange bends time to reverse the destruction, enters the Dark Dimension, and traps Dormammu in a time loop. He releases Dormammu on the condition that he withdraws his followers from Earth and never returns. Afterward, Strange assumes responsibility as the protector of the New York Sanctum.

Benedict Cumberbatch was initially considered for the lead role of Dr. Stephen Strange but had to decline due to scheduling conflicts. However, producers believed he was the ideal choice and delayed the film’s release date to accommodate his availability, ultimately casting him. An interesting anecdote from production is that Cumberbatch, in full costume, visited a comic book store and purchased a copy of the Doctor Strange comic.

During casting for the role of the Ancient One, names such as Morgan Freeman, Ken Watanabe, and Bill Nighy were considered, but the part ultimately went to Tilda Swinton. This decision sparked public controversy due to the character’s original Asian heritage in the comics; Marvel Studios executive Kevin Feige later expressed regret over whitewashing the character.
