Etnospor Culture Festival

The Etnospor Culture Festival is an international event focused on promoting traditional sports and keeping cultural heritage alive. The festival offers participants from various age groups the opportunity to gain firsthand experience with traditional games, sports, and cultural practices. Festival does not limit itself to sports alone but brings together gastronomy, art, folk games, and traditional ways of life as an integrated whole with society.

The term “Etnospor” refers to traditional sports and games that serve as carriers of ethnic identity. These sports are not merely physical activities; they are also reflections of cultural, religious, and social rituals. Etnospor encompasses a wide range of practices, from folk games to wrestling, from cirit to mounted archery.

Turk culture’s roots in Etnospor extend back to Central Asia, and throughout history these practices have supported social cohesion, individual belonging to the community, and the intergenerational transmission of traditions. According to Chinese sources, the Turks taught their children to ride horses, shoot arrows, and wrestle from an early age.

Initiated by the World Etnospor Confederation, the first Etnospor Culture Festival was held in Istanbul in 2016 and has since grown in participation and diversity each year. Subsequent editions in 2017, 2018, and beyond have showcased traditional games such as kökböri, wrestling, cirit, mangala, aşık oyunu, and egg racing; traditional nomadic life has been reconstructed using felt tents and oba settlements.

In addition, Karagöz-Hacivat shadow plays, folktales, and village spectator games have been brought to the stage as elements of oral culture. The festival functions as a vibrant space that revives cultural memory.

Etnospor serves as an important instrument in collectivist cultures for strengthening the bond between the individual and society. Empirical studies have shown that young people’s adoption of horizontal and vertical collectivist values enhances their sense of belonging. Engagement with Etnospor acts as a positive moderating factor in this context. These findings demonstrate that the Etnospor Culture Festival does not merely offer a nostalgic view of the past but also responds to the modern individual’s need for belonging.

During processes of industrialization and globalization, traditional cultural elements have often been overlooked by the media. However, the Etnospor Culture Festival seeks to reconstruct collective consciousness through media. It is emphasized that the proper use of media power is essential for the festival to become a widely recognized tradition and to achieve national reach. Additionally, support from public broadcasting institutions such as TRT through promotional content contributes to the visual revival of oral culture.

The Etnospor Culture Festival is also a significant attraction in the context of cultural tourism. Visitors from various provinces of Türkiye and abroad encounter the deep cultural heritage of Anatolia through the festival and transform this experience into a sustainable tourism product available throughout the year.

Field research has shown that integrating traditional sports into festivals through such events generates economic benefits and contributes to the preservation of cultural values.

The Etnospor Culture Festival has moved beyond being merely a national event and is beginning to acquire an international identity. Its integration with international initiatives such as the World Nomadic Games may enable it to attain recognition as an intangible cultural heritage at the UNESCO level. In this context, the festival can also be viewed as an instrument of cultural diplomacy and a channel for international communication.
