Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş rivalry is one of the oldest and most frequently contested matchups in Turkish football history. The rivalry has not been confined to league competitions alone; it has evolved over a broad historical framework through friendly matches, the Türkiye Cup, various tournament cups, and matches decided by default. The match played on 23 December 2025 in Group C of the Ziraat Türkiye Cup was one of the latest chapters in this long-standing rivalry.

Origins and Early Period

The first encounter between Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş took place in a friendly match in November 1924. The first official match between the two teams was played on 12 November 1926 at Taksim Stadium as part of the Istanbul League and ended goalless.

The first match in the professional league era was held on 18 March 1959 at İnönü Stadium and ended in a 1-0 victory for Fenerbahçe. The first night match in the rivalry occurred on 12 June 1960 at Ankara 19 Mayıs Stadium, which Fenerbahçe also won 1-0.

A total of 362 matches have been played between the two teams to date. These include league matches, Türkiye Cup games, friendly matches, and matches from various tournament cups. The most decisive victories in the rivalry were both recorded with a seven-goal margin. Beşiktaş’s biggest win against Fenerbahçe came in a friendly match on 23 March 1941 with a 7-1 scoreline. Fenerbahçe’s largest victory over Beşiktaş occurred in a friendly match on 6 December 1958 with a 7-0 result.

The highest number of goals scored in a single match is nine. This occurred in a TSYD Cup match on 11 August 1974, which Beşiktaş won 5-4. Additionally, the 1955 Atatürk Cup match that ended 4-4 and the 1960 Cemal Gürsel Cup match, which Fenerbahçe won 6-2, are also among the highest-scoring encounters.

Top Scorers and Individual Statistics

The player who has scored the most goals against Fenerbahçe while wearing Beşiktaş colors is Hakkı Yeten with 32 goals. The top scorer for Fenerbahçe against Beşiktaş is Cemil Turan with 19 goals. The player who has scored the most goals in a single match is Zeki Rıza Sporel. In a friendly match on 18 June 1926, Sporel scored all four goals in Fenerbahçe’s 4-1 victory over Beşiktaş.

The earliest goal was scored by Elvir Bolić in the 21st second of a league match on 10 March 1996. The earliest goal for Beşiktaş was scored by Mehmet Özdilek in the 37th second of a match in 1991.

The player with the most appearances in derbies is Beşiktaş’s Rıza Çalımbay, who played 64 matches for Beşiktaş against Fenerbahçe. He is followed by Şeref Görkey, Ulvi Güveneroğlu, and Müjdat Yetkiner.

Numerous players have worn both teams’ jerseys throughout the rivalry’s history. Additionally, Şenol Birol, Ali Kemal Denizci, Tayfur Havutcu, Mert Nobre, Tümer Metin, Mamadou Niang, and Gökhan Gönül have all scored in derbies while playing for both Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş.

Matches Decided by Default

Three matches in the rivalry’s history have been decided by default. In the 1983 Türkiye Cup quarter-final, which ended 1-1 on the pitch, the result was awarded 3-0 to Fenerbahçe after a Beşiktaş player participated despite being suspended.

A 2000 league match at İnönü Stadium, which Beşiktaş won 3-0 on the pitch, was awarded to Fenerbahçe due to a violation of the foreign player rule. The 2017-2018 Türkiye Cup semi-final second leg, played in Kadıköy, was suspended and later awarded 3-0 to Fenerbahçe after Beşiktaş failed to appear.

Interesting Notes

During a league match on 17 April 2005, after Beşiktaş’s goalkeeper received a red card and no substitutions remained, Daniel Pancu moved into goal. Pancu defended the net for the remainder of the match, which ended in a 4-3 victory for Beşiktaş.

Another unusual moment in the rivalry’s history occurred on 18 April 2010, when Fenerbahçe’s Bilica damaged the penalty spot before Beşiktaş took their penalty kick.

Disciplinary Statistics

In the last 10 seasons, 24 official matches between the two teams have produced a total of 19 red cards and 137 yellow cards. Of these, 81 were shown to Beşiktaş players and 75 to Fenerbahçe players. During the same period, Fenerbahçe completed their last 11 derbies with 11 players. The last derby Fenerbahçe completed with 10 players was on 19 July 2020.

Rivalry in the Ziraat Türkiye Cup

The two teams have met 22 times in the Türkiye Cup. Beşiktaş has won 11 of these matches, Fenerbahçe has won 5, and 6 ended in draws. Beşiktaş has scored 32 goals in the competition, while Fenerbahçe has scored 20.

The two teams have faced each other in three Türkiye Cup finals, all of which were won by Beşiktaş. Additionally, they have met in nine semi-finals and seven quarter-finals. Fenerbahçe ended their 34-year winless streak against Beşiktaş in the Türkiye Cup in 2017.

Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş faced each other on 23 December 2025 at the Chobani Stadium in the first matchweek of Group C of the Ziraat Türkiye Kupası. The match ended with a 2-1 victory for Beşiktaş after regulation time and extra time. The encounter was part of the group stage’s opening matchweek.

Match Summary

First Half

Beşiktaş initiated the first half with attacking play. In the 33rd minute, Beşiktaş took a 1-0 lead through a shot from inside the penalty area by Václav Černý. Following this goal, Fenerbahçe became more prominent in the opponent’s half.

A situation in the 40th minute triggered a VAR review. After the review, a penalty was awarded to Fenerbahçe in the 42nd minute. Marco Asensio converted the penalty in the 43rd minute, leveling the score at 1-1 before halftime.

Second Half

The second half featured mutual attacks but no further goals. Both teams created occasional chances around the penalty area. In the 74th minute, Bartuğ Elmaz of Fenerbahçe was substituted due to injury and replaced by Yiğit Efe Demir.
