Gercüş (District)

Gercüş is a district of Batman in Türkiye. With a population of 19,660, the district covers an area of 914 km² at an elevation of 950 meters and has a population density of 22 people per km². Located 62 km from the city center of Batman in the place area, Gercüş is situated on a plateau surrounded by mountains, on the northern slopes of the 1200-meter-high range known as the Mardin-Midyat pass. To its south lies Midyat, to the north Hasankeyf, to the east Dargeçit, and to the west Savur and Bismil districts. The district experiences a continental climate.

History

In the past, when the road from Diyarbakır to Damascus passed through the area, Gercüş was known as Şahmar. The name Kefercevs, believed to have derived from the Syriac word “kefer” (village), gradually evolved into Kercevs and then Gercüş. Originally a village under the Sanjak of Mardin, it gained district status on 30 May 1926 and was attached to Batman Province on 16 May 1990. The district includes the historical settlements of Fortress, Arıca, Kırkat and Yamanlar, which date back to the prehistoric period.

Geographical Structure

Gercüş is located on a plateau at an elevation of 950 meters. Its total area is 1070 km², with an average temperature of 20°C. Annual rainfall ranges between 500 and 600 mm. The district is surrounded by mountainous terrain.

Population and Administrative Structure

Gercüş has a population of 19,660 and is the district of Batman with the highest rural population percentage (69.8%). The district includes one town, six neighborhood and 58 villages. Located along the Batman-Mardin highway, Gercüş faces emigration to larger cities due to limited social infrastructure.

Economy and Agriculture

The economy of Gercüş is largely based on agriculture, with viticulture being the most significant agricultural activity. The majority of the 61,940 dekars of vineyard area in Batman are located in Gercüş. Local grape varieties such as Mazrona, Zeyti, Kırfok, Beyzılhımam, Sınceri, Bınetati, Devani, Koher, Tayfi, Hılsık, Kerküş and Hasani are cultivated here. The Mazrona grape, the most prized variety, is used in table grape production, dried grapes, grape molasses, pestil and walnut-stuffed sausage. Gercüş Mazrona grapes are noted for their high sugar content and are processed into products such as grape molasses, dried grapes, grape juice, walnut-stuffed sausage, pestil, vinegar, grape seed oil and salted grape products. Projects promoting grape walnut and pistachio production are carried out with Agency support. However, the processing industry has not developed and there are no industrial facilities in the district. It is recommended to develop agro-based industries such as processing, packaging and storage facilities to increase added value.

Infrastructure and Social Facilities

The Gercüş Municipality has implemented infrastructure projects such as sewage systems, a recreational park and road planning with agency support. However, limited social facilities constrain the district’s development. The historic Government Mansion, built in 1933, was restored in 2021 and opened to service in 2022. The Kırkat Reservoir Recreation Area has been developed to meet the social needs of the local population.

Tourism

The tourism potential of Gercüş is based on religious and natural tourism. The Seyid Bilal Türbesi and Purple Aho Monastery are important destinations for religious tourism. The Kırkat Reservoir, located 8 km from the district within the Tigris River basin, irrigates an area of 348 hectares. The surrounding area is planned to be developed with walking trails, water sports infrastructure and tourism projects. The historic Government Mansion is also targeted for tourism development.

Education and Industry

There is no higher education institution in the district. The industry and service sectors remain underdeveloped, and there are no businesses of significant scale. The establishment of a Small industrial zone is among the proposed projects to promote industrial development.
