Green Sea (Series)

Yeşil Deniz is a Turkish television series in the romantic comedy and drama genres, produced by TFT Yapım and first broadcast on TRT 1 on 24 October 2014. The series, with its screenplay written by Ali Kara, İdris Meydi and Serkan Birlik and directed by Yahya Samancı, was produced by Ayfer Özgürel. It aired a total of 75 episodes between 2014 and 2016, concluding on 8 April 2016. In addition to TRT 1, the series is also available on the TRT Tabii platform. The story is set in a coastal town in the Aegean region during the 1990s.

Plot

The series is set in the fictional Aegean town of Yeşilova during the 1990s. It centers on the adventures of four childhood friends known as the “sadıçlar”: Radyocu İsmail, Maggayvır Süleyman, Hurdacı Emin and Müezzin Cemil. These four friends pursue their dreams amid the town’s sincere and simple way of life, experiencing both humorous and emotional events. Yeşilova is brought to life through announcements from the municipal loudspeaker, fieldwork, and the strong sense of community among its residents. While exploring themes of love, friendship and daily village life, the series also reflects the nostalgic elements of the era.

Themes

The main themes of the series are friendship, solidarity, love and nostalgia. The atmosphere of the 1990s Aegean town highlights a time when mobile phones were uncommon and neighborhood and friendship ties were genuine. The simplicity of village life, the unifying role of agricultural work and the aspirations of the youth form the foundation of the narrative. Additionally, the conflict between poverty and dreams of wealth is portrayed with humor. The series highlights the authenticity of human relationships and the social values of the period.

Production Process

The series was produced by TFT Yapım. Filming took place in Birgi, a district of Ödemiş in İzmir. To reflect the atmosphere of a 1990s Aegean town, period-appropriate costumes, sets and accessories were used. Elements such as announcements from the municipal loudspeaker, field scenes and the town square enhanced the production’s realism. The series premiered on TRT 1 on 24 October 2014 at 19:55 and introduced new episodes every Friday.

Characters

• Radyocu İsmail (Burak Serdar Şanal): One of the sadıçlar. He lost his parents in a tractor accident and was raised by his uncle Kamil and aunt Cemile. He hosts the program “İsmail’s Request Line” on Ova FM. He is in love with Zümrüt Çakırlı.
• Maggayvır Süleyman (Mert Turak): Yeşilova’s skilled repairman, known for his ingenuity and creativity among the sadıçlar.
• Hurdacı Emin (Ali Barkın): One of the sadıçlar who earns his living as a scrap dealer. He is engaged to Emine.
• Müezzin Cemil (Burak Alkaş): The town’s muezzin, a cheerful and helpful figure among the sadıçlar.
• Sedef (Melis Babadağ): A character whom İsmail is interested in during the first season, but their engagement plans fail.
• Zümrüt Çakırlı (Öykü Çelik): The character İsmail falls in love with in the second season.
• Üsen (İlker Aksum): A character introduced in the second season, an influential figure in the town.
• Ayşe (Güneş Sayın): A character introduced in the second season who brings new dynamics to the story.
• Kamil (Emin Gürsoy): İsmail’s uncle, a beloved figure in the town.
