Hakkari University (HAKÜ)

Hakkari University is a public university established on 22 May 2008 by Law No. 5765. The university is located in the city center of Hakkari in Eastern Anatolia, Türkiye. Prior to its establishment, higher education activities in the region were carried out through academic units affiliated with Van Yüzüncü Yıl University.

History

The university was established as an independent institution on 22 May 2008 by Law No. 5765. In its founding phase, it began academic operations with faculties transferred from Van Yüzüncü Yıl University: the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences, and the Faculty of Engineering. In subsequent years, the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Fine Arts were established by the Council of Ministers Decision No. 2011/2018 published in the Official Gazette on 3 July 2011.

On 20 August 2011, the School of Foreign Languages commenced operations following the Council of Ministers Decision No. 2011/2088 published in the Official Gazette. Most recently, the Faculty of Health Sciences was established by Presidential Decree No. 2319 dated 27 March 2020. Additionally, the Institute of Graduate Education and the Center for Continuous Education were established under the rectorate, and the Rotary Capital Management Directorate began operations in 2011.

Campuses

The main campus of the university is the Zeynel Bey Campus, located approximately seven kilometers from the center of Hakkari city. This campus houses the primary academic, administrative, and social units. Some academic units operate in different buildings within the city center and districts.

Student Profile

The total number of students at the university is 4,061. Students are placed in undergraduate and associate degree programs based on their results in the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS), which is used for admission to higher education institutions.

Departments

Hakkari University offers various programs at the undergraduate and associate degree levels. These programs are grouped under their respective faculties, schools, and vocational schools.

Undergraduate Programs:

• The Faculty of Education offers undergraduate programs in German Language Teaching, Science Education, Primary Mathematics Teaching, English Language Teaching, Special Education Teaching, Guidance and Psychological Counseling, Class Teaching, and Turkish Language Teaching.
• The Faculty of Engineering offers undergraduate programs in Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering.
• The Faculty of Health Sciences offers the Nursing program.
• The Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences offers undergraduate programs in Economics, Business Administration, Finance, Political Science and International Relations.
• The Faculty of Theology offers undergraduate programs in Theology and Theology (M.T.O.K.).
• The Faculty of Sport Sciences offers the undergraduate program in Sports Management.

Associate Degree Programs:

• The Çölemerik Vocational School offers associate degree programs in Banking and Insurance, Computer Programming, Plant Protection, Electricity, Traditional Handicrafts, Cartography and Cadastre, Construction Technology, Laboratory and Veterinary Health, Accounting and Tax Applications, Radio and Television Programming, and Tourism and Hotel Management.
• The School of Health Services offers associate degree programs in Environmental Health, Child Development, Dialysis, First Aid and Emergency Care, Health Institution Management, Medical Documentation and Secretarial Services, Medical Imaging Techniques, and Medical Laboratory Techniques.
• The Yüksekova Vocational School offers associate degree programs in Beekeeping, Office Management and Executive Assistance, Natural Gas and Installation Technology, Logistics, Mushroom Cultivation, Postal Services, and Dairy and Livestock Farming.
• The School of Foreign Languages does not offer undergraduate or associate degree programs; it provides preparatory and support courses in foreign languages.

International Activities

Hakkari University participates in international student and staff mobility programs. Within this framework, exchange programs such as Erasmus+, Mevlana, and Farabi are implemented. These programs aim to provide academic and administrative staff and students with international experience.

Awards and Achievements

Hakkari University is included in the 2024–2025 Türkiye ranking conducted by University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP). The URAP ranking is based on six indicators: number of articles, citation count, number of scientific documents, total publication impact, total citation impact, and international collaboration. According to these results:

• The university has risen from 165th to 158th place among all universities in Türkiye.
• Among universities without a medical faculty, it has risen from 80th to 60th place.^【1】

Student Life

The Zeynel Bey Campus has been designed to meet students’ educational, research, and social needs. The campus includes classrooms, laboratories, a central library, a cafeteria, and various social areas.
