
Haldun Dormen, an artist recognized in Türkiye’s theater stage, cinema and television worlds as an actor, director, educator and playwright. His artistic career spanned over 70 years, during which he played an active role both in stage productions and in theater education. Dormen was honored with the title of state artist for his contributions to the performing arts.
Haldun Dormen was born on 5 April 1928 in Mersin. His father, Sait Ömer Bey, was a Cypriot businessman; his mother, Nimet Rüştü Hanım, came from a family originating in Istanbul. Shortly after Dormen’s birth, the family settled in the Şişli district of Istanbul. It is known that during his childhood, Dormen suffered a leg injury on his left side as a result of an accident at the age of eight.
Dormen began his education at the Galatasaray High School at the secondary level and completed his high school studies at Robert College. These early years of education laid the foundation for his growing interest in theater.
After completing high school, Dormen traveled to the United States of America to pursue training in performing arts and received graduate-level education at the Theater Department of Yale University. During this period, he worked as an actor and director in various theaters across the United States and performed on stages such as the Pasadena Playhouse in Hollywood.
In the mid-1950s, after completing his education, Dormen returned to Türkiye and joined the Küçük Sahne troupe under the direction of Muhsin Ertuğrul. One of the first plays he performed in was "Cinayet Var".
Dormen founded Cep Tiyatrosu through his own initiative to introduce a more intimate scale of theater to Türkiye. This theater venue provided young actors with opportunities to gain experience.
In 1957, Haldun Dormen established the Dormen Tiyatrosu. During this period, he collaborated with artists including Erol Günaydın, Metin Serezli, Altan Erbulak, Nisa Serezli and Erol Keskin. The troupe became one of the significant institutions in Turkish theater between 1957 and the 1970s.
In addition to theater, Dormen also worked in cinema. During this phase, which included film directing and producing, he contributed to screenwriting and took on roles both in front of and behind the camera. He also participated in television productions.
Haldun Dormen was actively involved in theater education and nurturing young artists. For much of his artistic life, he contributed to the discipline through guidance and pedagogical approaches aimed at young theater practitioners.
In 1959, Haldun Dormen married Betül Mardin, with whom he had a son named Ömer Dormen. The marriage lasted eight years.
At the age of 96, Haldun Dormen celebrated the 70th anniversary of his artistic career. Events organized for this occasion highlighted key milestones and contributions to his career through various programs featuring theater, music and gatherings.
Additionally, Dormen was recognized within theater circles as a state artist and honored in numerous events for his contributions to the performing arts.
In January 2026, Dormen was hospitalized due to an infection and was intubated for respiratory support. This condition was publicly announced by his son via social media.
Haldun Dormen passed away on 21 January 2026 at the age of 97 while receiving long-term treatment for an infection in the hospital. His son Ömer Dormen announced the news on social media, stating: “I am overwhelmed with grief as I bid farewell to my beloved father, Haldun Dormen. I offer my condolences to everyone who knew him, loved him and was touched by his life. May his resting place be paradise.”
