Haldun Taner is one of the original and influential figures in 20th-century Turkish literature and theater. He was born on 16 March 1915 in Istanbul and died in the same city on 7 May 1986. After completing his secondary education at Galatasaray High School, he began studying political science at Heidelberg University in Germany; however, he returned to Türkiye due to tuberculosis and underwent treatment. He graduated in 1950 from the Department of German Philology at Istanbul University Faculty of Letters and received training in theater and philosophy at the University of Vienna between 1955 and 1957. This period was a crucial phase that profoundly shaped his understanding of theater.
Haldun Taner’s literary career began in 1946 with the publication of his story “Töhmet” in the Yedigün magazine. In 1954 he won first prize in the international New York Herald Tribune competition for his story “Şişhane’ye Yağmur Yağıyordu” and was awarded the Sait Faik Short Story Prize for his book “On İkiye Bir Var” in the same year.
In his stories, he blended observations of local life with subtle humor and social critique. His language is simple, his narration compelling, and his character portrayals powerful. He also contributed to literary and cultural debates through his essays and newspaper columns.

His primary contribution to theater lies in being a pioneer of epic and cabaret theater in Türkiye. Taner was among the first writers to adapt Brechtian epic theater to the Turkish context, combining didactic elements with humor and breaking down the fourth wall between audience and stage. In 1967, together with Metin Akpınar and Zeki Alasya, he founded the Devekuşu Kabare Theater and produced classics of the genre such as “Gözlerimi Kaparım, Vazifemi Yaparım,” “Sersem Kocanın Kurnaz Karısı,” and “Keşanlı Ali Destanı.”
