Havran Mandarin

Havran mandarin (Citrus reticulata, Satsuma subgroup) is a mandarin citrus variety cultivated in the district of Havran, Balıkesir. It has an average weight of approximately 90 g and a dark orange color. Its peel is thin and easily peeled. The application submitted to the Turkish Patent Office by Havran Municipality on 29 December 2021 was registered on 9 August 2023 as Registration No. 1446 – geographical indication.

Geographical Boundary: Production stages carried out within the boundaries of Havran district, Balıkesir Province.

Usage Conditions: The term “Havran Mandarin” and the geographical indication emblem must be visibly displayed on the product or packaging; if packaging is not feasible, they must be visibly displayed at the production facility.

Monitoring: The product’s compliance with its definition and usage conditions is annually monitored by a commission composed of representatives from institutions such as the Municipality, Chamber of Commerce, and Directorate of Agriculture.

• Belonging to the Satsuma subgroup of Citrus reticulata, with an average fruit weight of approximately 90 g.
• Peel: Thin, easily peeled, with a dark orange hue.
• Aroma and Freshness: An early-ripening variety noted for its easy peeling, delicate texture, and suitability for fresh consumption.
• Tree Characteristics: Trees can grow up to 4–5 m in height; leaves are distinctive.
• Climate and Soil: Havran district is located in the inland Aegean region. Its moderate climate and humidity levels provide an ideal environment for the early development of Satsuma mandarins.
• Production Methodology: Traditional practices including hand pruning, seedling management, and cultivation under rain-resistant conditions are employed to support the development of aromatic compounds.

Havran mandarin is a local agricultural product intrinsically linked to the district where it is produced; its recognition and official protection through geographical indication have been established. This registration aims to institutionalize the identity of local producers and strengthen the product’s value chain.
