Horma Canyon is located in the Pınarbaşı district of Kastamonu and lies within the boundaries of Küre Mountains National Park. Situated approximately 100 km from Kastamonu city center and 4 km from Pınarbaşı, this canyon is one of Turkey’s most spectacular natural wonders. Formed by Zarı Stream, Horma Canyon features unique geological formations, natural rock arches, and water-sculpted structures, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts.

Geological Features and Natural Structure

Horma Canyon is characterized by deep rock pools, towering canyon walls, and narrow passages, all formed through centuries of water erosion. The Zarı Stream, which runs through the canyon, eventually forms Ilıca Waterfall at the end of the gorge. This waterfall cascades from a height of approximately 10 meters, creating a natural pool surrounded by lush vegetation and a dense forest.

The canyon’s height reaches up to 200 meters in certain places, while the wooden walking platform is suspended 50-60 meters above the canyon floor. The stepped rock formations within the canyon indicate that the water level was significantly higher in ancient times, leaving behind breathtaking geological structures.

Walking Trail and Exploration Routes

For visitors who wish to explore the canyon safely, a 3-kilometer-long wooden walkway has been constructed. Initiated in 2016 and completed in four years, this pathway was built using 270 tons of steel and 500 cubic meters of wood, with rigorous safety tests ensuring its durability.

This wooden walkway allows visitors to walk from the entrance of the canyon to Ilıca Waterfall, providing a secure and scenic journey. Alternatively, visitors can start their tour from Ilıca Village, visit the waterfall first, and then walk through the canyon towards Pınarbaşı.

Trekking, Adventure Sports, and Nature Photography

Horma Canyon is an ideal location for trekking and nature walks. While its narrow and steep cliffs provide challenging routes for adventure seekers, the wooden walking platform ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages.

For those planning to traverse the canyon through the water, it is highly recommended to do so with a professional guide, as the canyon’s floor features deep water holes and slippery rock surfaces, which may pose safety risks.

Additionally, Horma Canyon is a prime destination for nature photography, offering stunning landscapes especially in spring and autumn. During April and May, the water level rises, creating a more vibrant and dynamic scenery that enhances the canyon’s natural beauty.
