Iğdır University

Iğdır University is a public university located in Türkiye's Eastern Anatolia Region. It conducts its educational and teaching activities at the Şehit Bülent Yurtseven and Karaağaç campuses. The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate education and is active in the fields of research, education and social contribution. Its student profile is both national and international.

History

Higher education activities in Iğdır began in 1995 with the establishment of the Iğdır Vocational School under Kafkas University. This was followed in 2006 by the opening of the Iğdır Faculty of Agriculture, also within the structure of Kafkas University. As academic capacity in the region grew, Iğdır University was officially established on 22 May 2008, bringing all educational and teaching activities under an independent structure. Since its founding, the university has pursued goals of regional development, scientific production and the training of qualified human resources. In 2022, it was designated as a Specialized University in the field of “High-Value Agricultural Products,” reflecting both its responsiveness to regional needs and its commitment to deepening its scientific expertise.

Strategic Objectives

Iğdır University has established various objectives in line with its strategic planning principles. These include enhancing the quality of education and teaching, improving the quality and quantity of scientific research, strengthening institutional governance through participatory approaches, renewing physical and technological infrastructure, and increasing social contribution. The university continues to develop its institutional processes and relationships with external stakeholders within the framework of these objectives.

Academic Structure

As of 2023, Iğdır University provides services through 11 faculties, one graduate school, four vocational schools and 24 research and application centers. The faculties include the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Tourism, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Sports Sciences.

The vocational schools consist of four main units: the School of Health Services, Iğdır Vocational School, School of Technical Sciences and Tuzluca Vocational School. The university offers a variety of programs in both theoretical and applied education fields.

Academic Staff and Human Resources

A total of 500 academic staff members serve at the university. This staff includes professors, associate professors, doctoral instructors, teaching assistants and research assistants. Gender balance is observed in the distribution of academic personnel, and the number of female academics continues to increase each year. Additionally, nine foreign nationals among the academic staff contribute to the university’s international character. The administrative staff numbers 201. This human resource base ensures the smooth operation of the university’s academic and administrative activities.

Internationalization and Student Profile

Internationalization is one of the strategic objectives of Iğdır University. The university provides educational opportunities to students from different countries. According to current data, a total of 747 international students from 34 countries are enrolled, with registration processes still ongoing. When combined with students from various regions of Türkiye, the majority of the student body originates from the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions.

Technology and Innovation: Department of Software Engineering

In response to the need to adapt to technological advancements, Iğdır University established the Department of Software Engineering. The department has become one of the few programs in the region offering education in this discipline, keeping pace with developments in digital transformation and software technologies. Currently serving 40 students, the department adopts an educational model that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical skills. This approach aims to contribute to the region’s technological development and prepare graduates to meet current industry demands.

Şehit Bülent Yurtseven Campus

The Şehit Bülent Yurtseven Campus is located at Iğdır Doğubeyazıt Road No:156, 76000 Suveren/Iğdır and is distinguished by its spacious and modern infrastructure. In addition to various faculties, the campus hosts research centers and social facilities. Social amenities such as a 3000-person capacity mosque, open-air sports facilities, a viewing hill and a recreational area serve students and visitors. Access to the campus is provided within 10–15 minutes via municipal buses or university shuttle services departing from the city center.

Karaağaç Campus

Located in Iğdır Center, in Emek Neighborhood, Evren Paşa Street, this campus stands out due to its central location. It houses various academic and administrative units and offers easy pedestrian access from the city center.

Şehit Bülent Yurtseven Campus Mosque

The campus mosque has a capacity of 3000 people and a built-up area of 1600 m². The lower level of the mosque houses a Qur’an course, ablution area, library, children’s play area and a robotics coding room.
