IUS states that its vision is to serve as a leading higher education institution in the region by providing quality education and community service, and by promoting a multicultural academic environment focused on educational innovation and the creation and application of knowledge through research and projects.

Mission

According to its mission statement, IUS aims to promote multicultural understanding, intellectual development, and long-term regional and international cooperation. It pursues these goals through innovative study programs, academic and administrative quality, partnerships with local and regional stakeholders, and research activities intended to contribute to regional and global well-being.

Core Values

The University lists the following core values: accountability, cooperation, diversity, excellence, honesty, inclusiveness, integrity, interdisciplinarity, internationalization, openness, reliability, responsibility, quality, solidarity, transparency, and visibility.

Objectives

IUS groups its institutional objectives into three areas:

  1. Student-centered goals: improving student experience through academic and administrative quality, and through innovative programs and teaching methods.
  2. Research-centered goals: strengthening academic and scientific excellence; conducting research aligned with regional and global needs; and developing strategic partnerships with local and regional industries and institutions.
  3. Global citizenship goals: supporting regional and global cooperation; promoting multicultural values; strengthening ties with the local community; and contributing to peacebuilding and socio-economic development.

History and Development

International University of Sarajevo (IUS) was founded in 2003 as one of the largest educational initiatives in the Balkan region. For more than two decades, IUS has provided high-quality education to both local and international students across all three cycles of study, while being among the first higher education institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina to adopt European standards in teaching and learning.

Today, IUS offers 21 bachelor programs, 21 master programs, and 10 doctoral programs within six faculties, spanning a wide range of fields—from engineering and medical sciences to arts and social sciences, education, law, business administration, and humanities. With nearly 3,000 students from over 45 countries, the University continues to grow as a dynamic, multicultural academic community.

Beyond teaching, IUS is committed to fostering student achievement, strengthening its presence in the international academic arena, and building long-term cooperation with partner universities through projects and joint initiatives. The University supports academic and administrative excellence by attracting and retaining highly qualified staff and enabling their active engagement in innovative research and continuous improvement of services for students and the wider community.

From its beginnings with 14 employees and 68 students, IUS has expanded into a vibrant university campus and now employs almost 300 full-time academic and administrative staff from more than 12 countries. This growth is reflected in a modern campus environment featuring contemporary university facilities, a library, two student dormitories, a research center, and continuous capacity development that contributes to new opportunities and broader social progress in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A Truly International Learning Environment

IUS welcomes students from all over the world and delivers its programs in English, creating an academic setting shaped by multicultural exchange and global perspectives. The University follows the Bologna system (4+1+3) and awards internationally recognized B.S. and B.A. degrees. With nearly 3,000 students from 45 countries and faculty members from 12 countries, IUS supports academic and research activities across a broad spectrum - from Science and Engineering to Medicine, Arts, and Social Sciences.

IUS also offers a range of scholarship opportunities, with a particular focus on supporting students from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Faculties that Cover Key Modern Disciplines

IUS is organized into six faculties - each designed to provide both academic foundations and practical skills - supported by the English Language School (ELS) for students who need intensive language preparation.

Double Diploma Opportunities with Leading Turkish Universities

A distinctive feature of IUS is its Double Diploma Program (DDP), built through partnerships with four respected universities in Türkiye: Istanbul University, Marmara University, Istanbul Technical University, and the University of Health Sciences. Through these pathways, students can pursue double-degree options across numerous fields - ranging from architecture and engineering to law, psychology, management, and health sciences:

Graduate Studies and Academic Development

IUS provides master’s and doctoral studies through the IUS Graduate Office, offering programs across business, economics, political science and international relations, cultural studies, and multiple engineering and computing disciplines, among others.

Research, Laboratories, and Student Experience

Research and innovation are supported by the Research and Development Center (RDC), which strengthens interdisciplinary projects, applied learning, and laboratory-based education. Students gain practical experience through modern labs and project work that help bridge theory and real-world problem-solving.

Student Life (Clubs and Activities)

IUS hosts more than 25 student clubs, spanning interests from sports and technology to arts and culture.

A Modern, Secure Campus and Student Support Services

The IUS campus includes modern buildings, dining and social areas, sports facilities, dormitories, and a central library - supported by campus-wide wireless internet. Safety and access are ensured through 24/7 surveillance, 24/7 patrol, and card-based entry.

The IUS Library provides a dedicated study environment across reading rooms and specialized spaces, with seating and computer facilities designed to support both coursework and research.

On-campus accommodation is available in separate dormitories for male and female students, offering furnished rooms with private bathrooms and study-friendly spaces.
