Izmit Selim Sırrı Paşa Konağı

Sırrı Paşa Konağı is a 19th-century building located in the İzmit district of Kocaeli Province. It was commissioned in 1892 by Selim Sırrı Paşa, a senior Ottoman official of engineering origin. The architectural features of the mansion and its restoration process highlight its significance as a historical structure.

Sırrı Paşa Konağı was built by Selim Sırrı Paşa during his tenure as the Mutasarrıf of İzmit between 1888 and 1894. Construction began in 1890 and was completed in 1892. Selim Sırrı Paşa was among the first bureaucrats in the Ottoman State to hold the title of “Inspector Engineer of Roads and Bridges.” He died in this mansion in 1924. The mansion is situated on Yeni Çeşme Street within the boundaries of Hacı Hasan Neighborhood in İzmit. It is approximately 800 meters from the city center and is accessible by public transport and on foot.

Sırrı Paşa Konağı is a four-story building comprising a ground floor, one standard floor, one intermediate floor, and a cihannüma (observatory floor). The structure combines a timber frame system with load-bearing masonry elements. The mansion follows traditional Ottoman residential architecture, divided into harem and selamlık sections. Special bricks imported from France and Marseille tiles were used in its construction. In addition to local stone, reused stones from the Roman period were incorporated into the garden walls.

The interior walls of the mansion are adorned with landscape paintings and penwork designs featuring floral and geometric patterns. Gold leaf applications are present in certain areas. It is stated that the interior decoration was carried out by painters who also participated in the restoration of Dolmabahçe Palace.

After suffering a fire, Sırrı Paşa Konağı remained abandoned for many years. In 2009, the building was expropriated by the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality and entered a restoration process. Restoration works were completed in 2012. As a result of this effort, the mansion was awarded the 2011 Implementation Prize by the Union of Historic Cities. Today, it is open to visitors as part of various cultural activities.
