John Christopher Depp II was born in Kentucky as the youngest of four children to Betty Sue Palmer, a waitress, and John Christopher Depp, a construction engineer. His family moved to Florida when the artist was seven years old. After his parents divorced when he was fifteen, he dropped out of school and turned to music with a rock band called The Kids. He performed as an opening act for artists such as Iggy Pop, Duran Duran, and The B-52's. During his marriage to Lori Anne Allison in 1983, he worked as a salesperson for felt-tip pens to make a living. His meeting with actor Nicolas Cage during this period proved decisive in launching his professional acting career.
Depp’s film career began with the role of Glen Lantz in the 1984 horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street. This was followed by roles in Private Resort (1985) and Oliver Stone’s Platoon (1986). His portrayal of undercover police officer Tommy Hanson in the television series 21 Jump Street from 1987 to 1990 brought him widespread recognition in popular culture. During this time, Depp chose to distance himself from the “teen idol” image he had acquired and decided to focus on character-driven projects.
Depp’s major career transformation became evident with his first collaboration with director Tim Burton in the 1990 film Edward Scissorhands. This production marked the beginning of his focus on physically transformative and heavily made-up “idiosyncratic” characters. His performances in films such as What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), Ed Wood (1994), and Donnie Brasco (1997), in which he shared the lead with Al Pacino, allowed critics to assess his technical proficiency in dramatic roles.

The character of Captain Jack Sparrow, portrayed by Depp in 2003, became the centerpiece of his filmography, leading to high-grossing and globally successful projects and earning him his first Academy Award nomination. By 2011, Depp expanded his production capacity through his company Infinitum Nihil, taking on production responsibilities for projects such as Hugo and The Rum Diary. In 2022, the jury’s verdict in his defamation trial in Virginia, which ruled in his favor, ended a period of legal uncertainty in his career, allowing him to focus more intensively on directing.
The artist was married to Lori Anne Allison from 1983 to 1985 and later became engaged to Sherilyn Fenn, Jennifer Grey, Winona Ryder, and Kate Moss. He was in a relationship with French artist Vanessa Paradis from 1998 to 2012, with whom he has two children: Lily-Rose (born 1999) and Jack (born 2002). He was married to actress Amber Heard from 2015 to 2017.
Public records indicate that after his daughter Lily-Rose Depp received treatment in 2007, he donated two million dollars to London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital. Following the death of Heath Ledger, Depp donated the proceeds from his role in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), in which he took over Ledger’s unfinished role, to Ledger’s daughter. Additionally, after the death of author Hunter S. Thompson, he funded the fulfillment of Thompson’s final wish to have his ashes launched into the sky with a cannon shot.
Depp’s marriage to Amber Heard from 2015 to 2017 ended in mutual allegations and legal battles. The divorce case initiated by Heard in 2016 was settled through a mutual statement issued by both parties. In 2018, a column published by Heard in The Washington Post addressing domestic violence triggered a new legal process.

In a 2020 defamation case in the United Kingdom, the court found The Sun’s statements about Depp legally justifiable after reviewing the claims presented by Heard; following this ruling, Depp departed from the Fantastic Beasts series. In a 2022 defamation trial in Virginia (USA), the jury ruled that Heard’s article contained defamatory statements about Depp. Due to Virginia’s statutory cap on damages, the awarded amount was set at $10.35 million. In the same case, the jury also determined that Depp had defamed Heard through his attorney and ordered him to pay $2 million in damages.
Depp’s upcoming projects include Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol (2026), The Carnival at the End of Days (2026), The Libertine (2027), and The Night Stalker (2028).
