KALEKALIP KMG556

KALEKALIP KMG556 is a light machine gun designed by the Turkish defense industry company Kale Kalıp and chambered for 5.56x45 mm NATO standard ammunition. Developed to meet the fire support requirements of military units and special forces elements, it operates with an open bolt mechanism featuring a long-stroke gas piston and rotating bolt locking system.

Structural Features and Design

The KMG556 weighs 7.8 kilograms (7,800 grams) without a magazine and has an overall height of 235 millimeters. The weapon’s receiver is designed with a modular ergonomic layout that allows ambidextrous access to controls for both right- and left-handed shooters. Integrated STANAG 4694/M1913 Picatinny NATO accessory rails on the receiver enable the mounting of optical sights and various electro-optical systems. Various Cerakote® color options are available for the weapon’s receiver.

Stock and Bipod System

The rifle features a five-position telescopic stock that can be adjusted according to the shooter’s physical characteristics and equipment. Additionally, a three-position adjustable cheek rest is integrated into the stock to facilitate aiming. When extended, the overall length of the weapon is 1,000 millimeters; when retracted, it measures 900 millimeters. For improved stability during firing, a foldable bipod with three-height adjustments is mounted beneath the barrel.

Barrel Assembly

The barrel is manufactured using cold hammer forging technology. The internal surface is chrome-lined for corrosion and heat resistance, while the external surface is treated with manganese phosphate. The standard barrel length is designed at 16 inches (406 mm). An integrated carry/handling handle allows the barrel to be changed without gloves, even during operation or under extreme heat conditions.

Inside the barrel, six right-hand rifling grooves with a twist rate of 1:7 inches (1:177.8 mm) impart spin to the fired projectile. The muzzle thread is M15x1 and the weapon is standard-equipped with an A2 Birdcage-type flash hider.

Ballistic Performance and Technical Specifications

The trigger pull force of the KMG556 measures between 35 and 70 Newtons. The firing mechanism offers two modes: safe and fully automatic. Ammunition is fed either by belt feed from the left side of the receiver or via STANAG magazines with capacities of 50, 100, or 200 rounds.

Rate of Fire and Effective Range

The weapon’s rate of fire, dependent on gas regulator settings, ranges from 750 to 950 rounds per minute. The muzzle velocity of the fired ammunition reaches 900 meters per second. The distance between the rear sight and front sight on the integrated foldable modular mechanical sight system is 529 millimeters. According to ballistic tests, the effective range of the rifle is recorded as 600 meters for point targets and 800 meters for area suppression fire.
