KALEKALIP KMG556CL is a fully automatic compact light machine gun developed by the Turkish defense industry company Kale Kalıp, designed to operate with 5.56x45 mm NATO ammunition. The rifle employs a long-stroke gas piston and rotating bolt locking mechanism and has been engineered as a portable fire support element for military operations where weight and physical size are constrained. The system has a basic weight of 5.6 kilograms without a magazine and is designed to be carried and fired from the shoulder by a single operator.

Development Context and Design Concept

The weapon is built upon the existing platform of the manufacturer’s standard KMG series machine gun. Its dimensions have been reduced and its weight lowered to suit urban environments and special operations where traditional heavy machine guns face mobility limitations. The design concept is based on the modularity of a core machine gun platform, enabling rapid adaptation to diverse combat requirements through interchangeable components. Many existing parts from the KMG series in 5.56 mm or 7.62 mm calibers can be integrated into this system.

Structural Features

The weapon’s external components and moving parts are configured with ergonomic use and ballistic durability in mind. Control mechanisms are provided on both sides of the weapon to accommodate right-handed and left-handed operators.

Barrel Assembly and Receiver

The barrel of the KMG556CL is manufactured using cold hammer forging technology and is coated with manganese phosphate and hard chrome. The standard barrel length is set at 10.5 inches (267 mm) after polishing; however, alternative barrel options of 13 inches and 16 inches can be installed to meet operational requirements. The integrated handle on the receiver allows for rapid barrel replacement in the field. The upper and side surfaces of the weapon feature STANAG 4694/M1913 Picatinny NATO accessory rails and M-Lok interface mounts for attaching optics, lasers, or illumination devices.

Bipod System and Foregrip

The weapon is equipped with a telescopic and foldable bipod that can be adjusted in five distinct height settings to ensure compatibility with body armor and other equipment. In the fully extended position, the weapon measures 860 mm in length; when folded, it measures 775 mm; and when fully collapsed, it measures 610 mm. The firing mechanism permits shooting even when the bipod is fully retracted. A fixed, deployable forked foregrip mounted beneath the barrel enables the weapon to be supported on the ground during firing.

Technical Specifications and Performance Data

The system operates with left-side magazine feed and uses STANAG ammunition boxes with capacities of 50, 100, or 200 rounds.

Ballistic Values and Rate of Fire

The trigger pull force ranges between 35 and 70 Newtons. The rate of fire varies between 750 and 1000 rounds per minute. The barrel has a 1:7 inch twist rate with a 6-groove right-hand rifling pattern. Depending on the variant, the muzzle is fitted with either an A2 Birdcage or a 3-Prong flash hider. The muzzle velocity of ammunition fired from this system is 800 meters per second.

Range and Sights

The mechanical sight system is adjustable for distances between 300 and 1000 meters. The distance between the rear sight and front sight is 465 millimeters. According to technical tests, the effective range against point targets is recorded as 400 meters and against area targets as 600 meters.
