Kırkağaç Melon

Kırkağaç kavunu, Türkiye’nin Manisa iline bağlı Kırkağaç ilçesinde yetiştirilen, kendine özgü aroması, uzun raf ömrü ve dayanıklılığıyla tanınan bir kavun türüdür. Cucurbitaceae (kabakgiller) familyasına ait Cucumis melo L. türünden olan bu kavun, özellikle Ege Bölgesi’nin tarımsal mirasının önemli bir parçasıdır. Türkiye’de ve dünyada "Kırkağaç kavunu" adıyla bilinir ve genellikle tatlı, sulu yapısı ile dikkat çeker.

Characteristics

The Kırkağaç melon has a round or slightly oval shape. Its rind is typically covered with dark green stripes on a yellow background, and these stripes become more pronounced as the fruit ripens. Its average weight varies between 2 and 5 kg, though larger specimens can be found under optimal growing conditions. One of the most notable features of the Kırkağaç melon is its ability to remain fresh for extended periods. Under the registration, specific criteria have been defined for the seeds used, cultivation methods, and physical properties of the product including rind color, shape, and flavor profile. The geographical indication ensures that only melons produced in designated areas within and around the Kırkağaç district may be sold under this name. Monitoring is carried out by the Manisa Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry and the Kırkağaç Chamber of Agriculture. These institutions conduct regular inspections across production areas to ensure compliance with standards from seed quality to harvest practices. The registration imposes specific rules on producers to safeguard the melon’s authenticity and quality, including restrictions on the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
