Konaklı Ski Center

Konaklı Ski Center is a winter sports and tourism facility built to international standards, located approximately 17 to 22 kilometers southwest of the city center of Erzurum, on the western extensions of the Palandöken Mountains. Established to host professional alpine competitions during the 25th Winter Universiade held in Erzurum in 2011, the center spans a vast area of 460 hectares.^【1】 Situated at elevations between 2,200 and 3,185 meters above sea level, the facility is regarded as one of Türkiye’s most important winter sports destinations due to its high-quality snow, advanced technical equipment, and modern mechanical infrastructure.^【2】

Geographical Location and Physical Characteristics

Administratively, Konaklı Ski Center is located within the boundaries of Konaklı Neighborhood in the Palandöken district of Erzurum. The facility derives its name from Konaklı Village immediately to its north (formerly known as Tekederesi) and extends across the lower slopes of the central peaks of the Palandöken Mountains. The highest point of the center is Karakaya Hill at 3,167 meters elevation; the ski slopes are constructed on the eroded surfaces north of this peak, ranging in altitude from 3,143 to 2,315 meters.^【3】

Topographic Structure and Slope Gradient

The topography of the area is characterized by shallow but steep valleys and a series of slopes. Gradient values in certain sections exceed 50%, making the site highly suitable for professional ski disciplines.^【4】 The orientation of the slopes ranges between northeast and northwest, a factor that helps preserve the crystalline structure of the snow for extended periods and prolongs the ski season.^【5】

Access and Transportation Options

The facility enjoys high accessibility via road connections along the Erzurum-Bingöl highway.^【6】 The entire route from Erzurum city center, approximately a 15–20 minute drive away, is fully asphalted. During the winter season, buses operated by the Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality provide round-trip services between the city center and Konaklı on weekends, while transportation on other days is provided by private vehicles and taxis.^【7】 The site features a parking area with a capacity of approximately 300 private vehicles and 20 buses.

Climatic Characteristics and Snow Structure

One of the most fundamental factors determining Konaklı’s winter tourism potential is its harsh continental climate and the resulting snow cover characteristics. While snow remains on the ground for an average of 105 to 113 days across Erzurum, in the higher-altitude Konaklı area this duration is significantly extended due to aspect and elevation effects.^【8】

Temperature and Precipitation Data

The region experiences an average of 165.7 days per year with temperatures below 0°C. The annual average number of snowfall days is 64.6, with the heaviest precipitation occurring in March, January, February, and December.^【9】 The snow quality is of the ideal "powder snow" type for skiing.

Artificial Snowmaking Infrastructure

To extend the season from early December to the end of March during periods of insufficient natural snowfall, a full artificial snowmaking system has been installed across all slopes.^【10】 This system, capable of covering a total area of 62 hectares, is fed by a specially constructed reservoir on the site, protected by wire fencing.^【11】

Slopes and Mechanical Facilities

Konaklı Ski Center distinguishes itself from other facilities in Türkiye through its technically advanced infrastructure specifically designed for alpine competitions.^【12】 The center features a total of 11 main slopes built to international standards.^【13】

Slope Standards and Disciplines

The total length of the slopes at the site is 33,100 meters. The longest slope is 4,600 meters (Slope I), while the shortest is Slope XI, known as the "Beginner Slope," at 1,100 meters.^【14】 Special start points have been designated for the disciplines required in alpine skiing:

• Men’s Super-G: Start at 2,960 m, finish at 2,340 m.
• Women’s Super-G: Start at 3,045 m, finish at 2,495 m.
• Giant Slalom: Men: 2,852 m; Women: 2,850 m.^【15】
• Slalom: Start at 2,695 m, finish at 2,495 m for both categories.

Mechanical Facility Equipment

The ski center is equipped with six mechanical lifts (chairlifts), with a combined hourly capacity of 9,193 persons.^【16】 All lifts consist of four-seater units:

3. C Lift: Length 1,702 m, elevation gain 2,772 m.

Comprehensive service buildings at Konaklı meet the daily needs of athletes and visitors. These buildings house ski rental services, ticket offices, cafés, restaurants, rest areas, a ski school, and a medical unit.^【18】

Konaklı Hotel

The Konaklı Hotel, constructed by the Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality, is a major accommodation investment for the center. The hotel has a total capacity of 36 rooms and 76 beds, and includes a conference hall, restaurant, and ski shop.^【19】

Winter Drill and Sports

The "Erzurum 2022 Winter Drill," coordinated by the Ministry of Interior, was conducted at this center in 2022 with the participation of 803 personnel and helicopters.^【20】

TÜBİTAK Sky Observation Event

In August 2025, Konaklı hosted Türkiye’s largest sky observation event. With over 33,000 applications received from all 81 provinces of Türkiye, participants conducted observations in an environment free from light pollution.
