Border disputes between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan emerged following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, as the two nations struggled to define their 970-kilometer shared border. Over the years, numerous skirmishes and violent confrontations occurred, particularly around the Batken region.

After more than 20 years of negotiations, the agreement was signed at the Cohesion Center in Bishkek during an official visit by Tajik President Rahmon.
