Luis Enrique began his professional football career in 1991 with Sporting Gijón, scoring 17 goals in 42 appearances during his first season in La Liga. In the summer of 1991, he transferred to Real Madrid and signed a five-year contract. During his time at Real Madrid, he played in various midfield and defensive positions, making a total of 213 appearances and scoring 18 goals with 9 assists over the course of his five-year stint.
After his contract with Real Madrid expired, he joined Barcelona in 1996 and played for the club until 2004. At Barcelona, he significantly increased his goal output, matching his five-year total from Real Madrid in his first season alone. He made a total of 300 official appearances for Barcelona, scoring 108 goals and winning eight major trophies, including two La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey titles and one UEFA Super Cup. At the age of 34, he decided to retire from professional football.
After retiring as a player, Luis Enrique turned to coaching, initially taking charge of Barcelona B, where he managed 124 matches. He then moved to the senior level with AS Roma but left at the end of his first season.
He subsequently became head coach of Celta Vigo and significantly improved the team’s performance. Under his leadership, Celta Vigo defeated Real Madrid and finished the season in ninth place, having ended the previous campaign in 17th. This successful turnaround led to a coaching offer from Barcelona in 2014.
At Barcelona, he won back-to-back La Liga titles and played a key role in shaping the attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar. During the 2014–15 season, the trio scored a combined 122 goals and helped Barcelona win the Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey, achieving the historic “treble” after eliminating Bayern Munich in the Champions League semifinals. He won another La Liga title in his second season, but Barcelona were eliminated in the Champions League quarterfinals by Atlético Madrid. In the 2016–17 season, the team finished second in La Liga and again exited the Champions League at the quarterfinal stage. He left Barcelona upon the expiration of his contract.
Following the 2018 FIFA World Cup, he was appointed head coach of the Spain national team but resigned after 11 months due to personal reasons. He later returned to the role and resumed leadership of the national team ahead of the 2020 UEFA European Championship, guiding them to the semifinals. At the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Spain were eliminated in the round of 16 by Morocco. During this period, he implemented a structural transformation by giving opportunities to young players.
In 2023, he signed a two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). In his first season (2024–25), he led the team to victory in Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France. Following Kylian Mbappé’s transfer to Real Madrid, Luis Enrique built an attacking system centered around wingers such as Barcola, Kvara, Désiré Doué and Dembélé.
PSG advanced to the UEFA Champions League final by defeating Liverpool in the round of 16 and Arsenal in the semifinals, then triumphed over Inter in the final to win their first-ever Champions League title.
Luis Enrique’s coaching philosophy is built on loyalty to the team system and adherence to the game plan. He aims to integrate individual player talents into the collective structure. He exhibits strong leadership, demanding commitment from his players to his decisions. He adopts a disciplined approach in squad selection and tactical implementation.
Luis Enrique Martínez García married Elena Cullell in 1997. The couple has three children. The most widely known event in his personal life was the loss of his nine-year-old daughter, Xana, to bone cancer in 2019, which led him to temporarily step away from his duties with the Spain national team. Since retiring from playing, Luis Enrique has remained active in sports, engaging in endurance disciplines such as mountain biking and marathon running.
