Manisa Celal Bayar University (MCBÜ)

Manisa Celal Bayar University (MCBÜ) is named after Celâl Bayar, the third President of the Republic of Türkiye. The university is located in the city of Manisa within the Aegean Region. MCBÜ was established by merging existing units previously affiliated with other universities. Since its founding, it has continuously expanded its academic structure to offer education and research activities at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels.

History

The establishment of Manisa Celal Bayar University was formalized by Law No. 3837, published in the Official Gazette on 11 July 1992. Among the first units transferred to the university were academic structures previously affiliated with Dokuz Eylül University and Ege University. The founding units include the Faculties of Science and Literature, Engineering, and Medicine, established under the rectorate; the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences, which was transferred from Dokuz Eylül University with a revised name and affiliation; and the Demirci School of Education, which was upgraded to become the Faculty of Education. Additionally, the Akhisar Tobacco Expertise School, previously affiliated with Ege University, was renamed the Tobacco Expertise School; the Alaşehir Vocational School; and the School of Physical Education and Sports, which was established after being transferred from Dokuz Eylül University with a revised name and affiliation, also formed part of the founding structure.

The first graduate education units established were the Institutes of Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Health Sciences. The university’s oldest predecessor structure dates back to 1975, when it was founded as a unit under Ege University and later became the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences. Since its founding, new vocational schools, faculties and institutes have been established at various times. During this process, units such as the School of Health and the Akhisar Applied Sciences School were transformed into the Faculty of Health Sciences and the School of Applied Sciences, respectively. The university’s name was officially changed to Manisa Celal Bayar University in 2016.

Campuses

The university’s educational, instructional, research and administrative activities are carried out across campuses located in the city of Manisa and its districts. The main campus, the Şehit Prof. Dr. İlhan Varank Campus, is situated in the Muradiye district of Manisa and hosts numerous faculties. The Uncubozköy Health Campus, located in the city center, houses the Faculty of Medicine and the university hospital. The institution, transferred from the Ministry of Health on 23 April 1994 and renamed Hafsa Sultan Research and Application Hospital on 4 May 2012, operates within this campus. Other campuses include the Salihli 5 Eylül Campus, the Akhisar Campus, and the Şehzadeler Campus, which host academic units in various districts of Manisa.

Student Profile

A total of 39,704 students are enrolled at Manisa Celal Bayar University at the associate, undergraduate and graduate levels. In 2023, 11,425 new students were admitted based on the results of the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS). The admission rate for undergraduate programs is 98.96%. Approximately 51% of the total student body are male and 49% are female. Additionally, international students pursue their education at the university.^【1】

Departments

Through its 16 faculties, 2 vocational schools and 15 vocational institutes, the university offers a total of 217 programs at the associate, undergraduate and graduate levels.

Health Sciences Field: The Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry and Faculty of Health Sciences (including departments such as Nursing and Midwifery) form the core disciplines in this field.

Engineering and Technology Field: Programs in core engineering disciplines such as Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Food Engineering and Civil Engineering are offered within the Faculty of Engineering and the Hasan Ferdi Turgutlu Faculty of Technology.

Social and Administrative Sciences Field: The Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Business and Salihli Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences offer departments such as Economics, Business Administration, International Relations and Finance. Additionally, social science departments such as History and Psychology are available within the Faculty of Science and Literature.

Education, Arts and Other Fields: Academic units such as the Demirci Faculty of Education, Faculty of Sports Sciences, Faculty of Communication, Faculty of Theology and Faculty of Art and Design provide a diverse academic spectrum.

In addition, students are offered the opportunity to pursue multiple fields of study through double major and minor programs.

International Activities

The university supports international mobility. It implements student and staff exchange agreements with higher education institutions in Europe under the Erasmus+ program. Academic collaborations are also maintained with universities in other regions through the Mevlana Exchange Program.

Awards and Achievements

The university’s academic staff receive support from national and international organizations for their scientific research projects and publications. Students have achieved rankings in national and international events such as sports and technology competitions.

2018 Publication Performance Awards: The university awarded publication performance prizes categorized by scientific fields.

Best Paper Award: Banu Sarıbay, Efe Sarıbay and Aynur İncekırık were awarded for their paper titled “A Study on the Relationship Between Virtual Procrastination Behavior of University Students and Academic Procrastination and Academic Achievement” presented at the “İzceas 2018” congress^【2】.

Disability-Free University Awards (YÖK): In 2022, the Higher Education Council (YÖK) awarded the university a total of eight flags under the Disability-Free Universities Awards.

Student Life

The campuses feature central libraries, classrooms, laboratories, dining halls and sports facilities to meet students’ academic and social needs. Students organize social and cultural activities through clubs and associations based on their interests. Accommodation is provided through dormitories operated by the Credit and Hostels Institution (KYK). Additionally, the restored Hafsa Sultan Şifahanesi Museum of Medical History and the Manisa Mevlevihanesi are used as cultural activity venues.
