

Melih Mahmutoğlu was born on May 12, 1990 in Istanbul. He began his basketball career in the youth system of Genç Boğaziçi. In 1999, he transferred to the youth academy of Efes Pilsen, taking his first professional step.
Mahmutoğlu began his professional career in 2006 with Pertevniyal, the reserve team of Anadolu Efes. He played three seasons in the Turkish Basketball Second League with this team.
In the 2008–2009 season, he transferred to Darüşşafaka. In his first season, he averaged 7.3 points and 0.5 assists in 32 games. In the 2009–2010 season, he averaged 5.9 points and 0.8 assists in 28 games. He stood out in the final three games of the season with a 15.3-point average, scoring a season-high 18 points against Türk Telekom.
Mahmutoğlu played for Galatasaray during the 2010–2011 season.
In the 2011–2012 season, he transferred to Antalya BŞB, where he averaged 11.8 points and a 40.1% three-point shooting percentage.
Mahmutoğlu spent the 2012–2013 season with Erdemirspor, averaging 11.9 points and a 38.8% three-point shooting percentage.
In the 2013–2014 season, Mahmutoğlu transferred to Fenerbahçe. He assumed the role of team captain starting in the 2015–2016 season. With Fenerbahçe, he won one EuroLeague championship (2017), two EuroLeague runner-up finishes (2016, 2018), six Turkish League titles (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and subsequent seasons), four Turkish Cups, and three Presidential Cups. He signed a new two-year contract with the club in 2022. As of 2024, he is in his 11th season with the team.
Mahmutoğlu has been a member of the senior Turkish national basketball team since 2013. He represented Türkiye at the 2013 Mediterranean Games, the 2015 and 2017 FIBA EuroBasket tournaments, the 2016 Olympic Qualifying Tournament, and the 2019 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers. He also played for the U20 national team and notably scored 20 points against Ukraine at the 15th Turgut Atakol Tournament.
