Prof. Dr. Mustafa İnan was born on 24 August 1911 in Adana. During the War of Independence, his family migrated to Konya due to French occupation and remained there for approximately two and a half years. After completing his early education in Konya, İnan returned to Adana following the end of the war and continued his studies there. He completed his secondary education at Adana High School and in 1931 enrolled at the Higher Engineering School of Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ). He successfully completed his studies and graduated first in his class in 1937.

His academic achievements brought him to prominence in the scientific community. In 1937, he traveled to Zurich, Switzerland, where he earned his doctorate at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich) on the topic of “Vierendel Beams.” After completing his doctorate, Mustafa İnan continued his scientific research upon returning to Türkiye.
In 1941, Mustafa İnan returned to Istanbul Technical University to begin his academic career. Appointed as Assistant Lecturer in Technical Mechanics and Strength of Materials at İTÜ, he was promoted to associate professor in 1944 and to full professor in 1945. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering from 1954 to 1957 and as Rector of Istanbul Technical University from 1957 to 1959. During this period, he made significant contributions to the development of Turkish engineering education.
İnan’s scientific work achieved major advances in the fields of elastic mechanics and photoelasticity. His doctoral research on photoelasticity marked a turning point in Turkish engineering. His first published article in 1943, titled “Shear Center,” is recognized as a profound contribution reflecting his deep expertise in engineering.
Mustafa İnan also introduced the concept of the “Transfer Matrix” in structural analysis and engineering, bringing a significant innovation to the field. This concept had a major impact on structural analysis and engineering design. Between 1959 and 1964, he published an article titled “Some Results on the Orbital Calculations of Artificial Satellites,” making contributions to the field of aerospace engineering.

Mustafa İnan did not confine his work to engineering alone; he also produced significant contributions in disciplines such as language and literature. He conducted in-depth studies on words and meanings in Turkish as well as in Persian, Arabic, Greek, and other languages. His articles on language and mathematics demonstrate his multidisciplinary character as a scholar. His work titled “Language and Mathematics” stands as an important contribution reflecting his intellectual depth and broad intellectual interests.
İnan also wrote extensively and delivered seminars on diverse philosophical traditions, from Native American thought to Arya-Dharma, influenced by Western intellectual currents. This multidisciplinary breadth established him not only as a respected figure in engineering but also as a notable contributor to philosophical thought and cultural studies.
Prof. Dr. Mustafa İnan was also a multifaceted individual in his personal life. In 1944, he married Prof. Dr. Jale Ogan, one of Türkiye’s first female archaeologists, and they had a son named Hüseyin. Living in Istanbul with his family, İnan remained active in social and cultural spheres while continuing his scientific work.
Prof. Dr. Mustafa İnan traveled to Freiburg, Germany, in 1967 to continue his scientific research. He passed away on 5 August 1967 in Germany while undergoing medical treatment. His funeral was held on 10 August 1967 at the Taşkışla Building of Istanbul Technical University, after which he was buried at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery. As one of Türkiye’s foremost scientists, his contributions to the nation’s scientific development have never been forgotten.
Since his death, Mustafa İnan’s name has been honored through various commemorative events and awards. In 1971, he was awarded the “Service Award” by the TÜBİTAK Science Council. Additionally, the Central Library of Istanbul Technical University and a viaduct between Istanbul and Ankara have been named in his honor. These tributes ensure that his contributions to Turkish engineering are remembered annually.
