Plot
Pay It Forward begins with 12-year-old Trevor McKinney (Haley Joel Osment) in Las Vegas with a social studies assignment: come up with a plan to make the world a better place. Trevor develops a system he calls "doing good to others". In this system, instead of reciprocating, the person doing the favor continues the chain by doing favors for three new people. First, he tries to help Jerry, a homeless man. His mother, Arlene (Helen Hunt), is angry that Trevor took Jerry in and is a single mother struggling with alcoholism. Later in the movie, Trevor's personal troubles are also shown.
Trevor's idea initially seems to fail, but thanks to a journalist (Jay Mohr), the movement is traced and begins to spread across the country. While trying to protect a friend, Trevor is stabbed and dies. However, after his death, the movement to "do good to others" grows, and hundreds of people pay tribute to him.
