Respect for the Elderly Week is observed annually from March 18 to 24 to emphasize the societal value of older individuals, demonstrate the love and respect they deserve, and raise awareness about their needs. The primary purpose of the week is to enhance the quality of life for elderly individuals and to prepare all members of society for the aging process.
History
Respect for the Elderly Week was declared in 1982 by the World Health Organization and has been celebrated globally to highlight the importance of older adults. In Türkiye, the week is also commemorated annually during the same dates to recognize the societal value of elderly individuals and support healthy aging.
Demographic and Social Significance
Aging is a universal phenomenon of increasing importance for all countries worldwide. The extension of life expectancy and the decline in population growth rates have led to a higher proportion of elderly individuals, accelerating the process of demographic aging. Elderly individuals serve as a cultural and social bridge between the past and the future, transmitting traditions and experiences to younger generations. Therefore, the social participation and active lifestyle of older adults are of great societal importance.
Healthy and Active Aging
Maintaining health and improving quality of life during old age is critically important for both individuals and society. Adequate and balanced nutrition, avoidance of alcohol and tobacco, regular physical activity, and exercise contribute to preventing health problems that may arise during aging. Regular physical activity supports cardiovascular health, reduces the risk of falls and injuries, improves sleep quality, and assists with weight management. A lack of activity accelerates physiological changes associated with aging and can lead to the early onset of chronic diseases.

Safe Aging and Preventive Measures
Simple measures taken in the living environments of older adults are important for preventing falls and accidents. Creating a safe environment at home and in social spaces helps elderly individuals maintain independence and participate actively in social life. Regular health examinations appropriate to age and condition, proper footwear, home modifications, and physical activity are fundamental practices supporting safe aging.
Institutional and Societal Initiatives
Various institutional efforts are carried out to support the healthy and safe lives of elderly individuals. Türkiye Sağlıklı Yaşlanma Eylem Planı ve Uygulama Programı (The Türkiye Healthy Aging Action Plan and Implementation Program) aims to create safe and healthy environments. The Disease Management Platform allows for regular monitoring and assessment of elderly individuals’ health. Healthy Life Centers provide counseling and training on healthy aging and safe environments, raising awareness. Conferences and events organized at universities and vocational schools emphasize the societal value of older adults and the importance of their life experiences.
Religious and Cultural Perspective
Old age is recognized as a natural stage of life in cultural and religious texts. The respect given to elderly individuals in society is based on their experience and wisdom. Religious texts describe the care and service of older adults as a valuable duty. This perspective highlights the importance of giving special attention to elderly individuals and providing societal support.
