Rikkat

Origin

The word rikkat (رِقّة) entered Turkish from the Arabic root rḳḳ, meaning "to show sensitivity, to feel compassion, to be delicate." The root verb raḳḳa conveys both physical delicacy and the softening of the heart. The earliest documented usage in Turkish written records dates back to 1330 in Aşık Paşa’s work Garib-name.

Areas of Use

• Literature and Rhetoric: Used to describe the elegance of style in texts and the aesthetic harmony of sounds. In classical Ottoman poetry, the use of a rakik language is closely associated with rikkat.
• Ethics and Sufism: Denotes emotional tenderness in human relationships, the capacity for empathy, and sensitivity to the sorrows of others.
• Phonetics and Linguistics: A term employed to describe the pronunciation characteristics of words, particularly the soft and fluid qualities of sounds.
• Idioms: The expression "rikkatine dokunmak" is frequently used to describe a situation that deeply affects and saddens a person.
