Shuayb Ancient City (Shuayip City)

Şuayb Ancient City is located within the boundaries of Harran district in Şanlıurfa province, in Southeastern Anatolia, Türkiye. The city is situated approximately 45 kilometers southeast of Harran, near Özkent Neighborhood. It lies within the historically and archaeologically significant Harran Plain, and the remains of the ancient city are spread over a vast area.

History

Şuayb Ancient City is also known locally as “Şuayip City.” This name is attributed to the local belief that the prophet Shuayb lived in this area. However, this naming is based on folk traditions rather than scientific archaeological evidence.

Architectural and Archaeological Features

The structures at the site date to the Roman period. Investigations in the region have revealed numerous buildings exhibiting characteristics of Roman architecture. Most of the structures in the city were constructed from basalt stone. The plans of buildings made from precisely cut stones are clearly visible. The residential buildings, street layout, and public structures found at the ancient city indicate a planned urban settlement. A structure carved into a natural rock formation in the northeastern part of the city is associated by locals with the prophet Shuayb.

Conservation Status and Visit

Şuayb Ancient City is an open-air archaeological site accessible to visitors. Efforts by the Şanlıurfa Governorate, the Metropolitan Municipality, and the Harran District Governorate aim to promote and preserve the area. Informational signs and directional markers are provided on-site.
