Sincik Handwoven Carpet

Sincik handwoven carpet is a decorative and durable rug produced using wool yarn on traditional handlooms in the Sincik district of Adıyaman province. The carpets, woven with region-specific motifs and colors, are a product of a weaving culture that has endured for centuries.

Characteristics

Sincik handwoven carpets are woven on ground looms using cotton for the warp and sheep wool for the weft. The carpets are typically produced in dark colors such as red maroon navy blue black and white. Known locally as “yan halı” these carpets can be woven as single pieces measuring approximately 120 to 130 centimeters in width and 5 to 5.20 meters in length. Production in prayer rug sizes is also carried out.

For the past 40 to 45 years the pattern known as “rapurtlu desen” has been used in the designs. This pattern consists of four star motifs arranged symmetrically. The color composition predominantly features red black gray and yellow. Sincik carpets are recognized for their coarse and thick weave.

Production Process

The tools and equipment used in carpet weaving include ground looms chitrik tesi birek kirkit bij and scissors. The wool yarns are processed and dyed using traditional methods before weaving. The yarns are mostly dyed black and red with chemical dyes while gray is obtained from the natural color of goat wool.

During weaving a short initial section called “kilim” is first created. The main body of the carpet is then woven with star motifs applied. Fringes are added at the end followed by quality control and trimming operations to prepare the carpet for sale.

Geographical Boundaries and Oversight

Due to the craftsmanship and traditional knowledge required all stages of Sincik handwoven carpet production are carried out exclusively within the boundaries of Sincik district in Adıyaman. Inspections are conducted by a three-member committee composed of representatives from the Sincik District Directorate of National Education the District Governorship and the Municipality. Every stage from the yarns used to the patterns dimensions and quality control is carefully examined.

The Sincik handwoven carpet is a valuable craft product that reflects the cultural heritage of the region and serves as an important source of livelihood for the local population. Its registration and protection significantly contribute to the transmission of this traditional craft to future generations.
