Sivas Government House

Sivas Government House is a significant public building located in the city center, reflecting the civil architectural characteristics of the Ottoman period. Constructed in 1884 by Governor Halil Rıfat Paşa, the building was originally designed as a two-story structure using cut stone. Measuring 50 meters in length and 20 meters in width, the house features aesthetic details that exemplify the stonemasonry of its era. Large entrance doors supported by pairs of columns are present on both the front and rear facades.

During the governorship of Muammer Bey between 1913 and 1917, a third floor was added using wooden materials. However, a major fire in 1978 completely destroyed the third floor, leaving only the outer walls of the first two floors standing. Through extensive restoration work carried out in 1982, the building was returned to its original appearance and reopened as the Government House. Further enhancements completed at the end of 2005 strengthened the structure both functionally and architecturally.

Architectural Features

Fire and Restoration Process

The fire of 1978 completely destroyed the wooden third floor, leaving only the outer walls of the first and second floors intact. Following this extensive damage, the building became unusable. Restoration work carried out in 1982 successfully restored the house to its original appearance. Further improvements completed at the end of 2005 enabled the building to resume its administrative role in the city, both physically and functionally.
