TCG Burgazada (F-513)

TCG Burgazada (F-513) is the third vessel of the Ada-class corvettes to join the inventory of the Turkish Naval Forces. The ship was constructed at the Istanbul Shipyard Command under the MİLGEM (National Ship) Project. This platform, developed to meet modern naval warfare requirements, stands out for its high degree of domestic capability in design, production and armament. Following its predecessors TCG Heybeliada and TCG Büyükada, Burgazada also enhances the naval forces’ effectiveness in reconnaissance, surveillance, maritime control and patrol missions.

Construction and Commissioning

The primary objective of the MİLGEM Project is to design and produce warships required by Türkiye using domestic capabilities and to reduce external dependency in this domain. The Ada-class corvettes were the first products of this vision. Critical engineering steps in the project were fulfilled by Türkiye’s national defense industry through the design, system integration and armament activities conducted by STM.

The construction of TCG Burgazada was carried out at the Istanbul Shipyard Command using a modular approach, with hull sections completed separately and then assembled. This method ensured greater efficiency in the production process and provided greater flexibility for maintenance and modernization activities.

Burgazada was launched in 2016 and officially entered service with the Turkish Naval Forces in 2018 after completion of its armament and testing phases. The commissioning ceremony also held symbolic significance, demonstrating the level achieved by Türkiye’s national defense industry through the MİLGEM Project.

Mission and Operational Contribution

Burgazada’s area of operations encompasses reconnaissance, surveillance, patrol and maritime control missions in the Mediterranean, Aegean and Black Seas. The vessel began its reconnaissance, surveillance and patrol duties in the Eastern Mediterranean, contributing to the protection of maritime jurisdictional areas in the region.

The Ada-class corvettes are equipped with low radar signatures, high maneuverability and advanced sensor systems. These features enable Burgazada to serve effectively both during peacetime in ensuring maritime security and during crises or conflicts as a credible deterrent.

Technical Armament and Systems

According to STM’s project descriptions, the Ada-class corvettes were designed with modern combat management systems, domestic software integrations and equipment enabling multi-role operations. The vessel is fitted with current-generation radar, sonar, electronic warfare, navigation and communication systems.

The armament suite includes surface-to-surface guided missiles, a naval gun, torpedoes and air defense systems. This comprehensive armament transforms Burgazada into an effective platform against both surface and submarine targets.

Strategic Importance

TCG Burgazada is one of the key examples of Türkiye’s defense industry projects developed with domestic capabilities. The vessel serves as a strategic force multiplier for the Turkish Naval Forces, which aim to maintain a persistent presence at sea. The design, production and integration expertise gained through the MİLGEM Project have laid the foundation not only for Burgazada but also for future national warships.

Its initial missions in the Eastern Mediterranean have demonstrated that Burgazada is not merely a technical platform but also a symbol reinforcing Türkiye’s presence in its maritime domains.
